Great overview of audience economics

This is a serious book about how audiences are made and sold across a variety of media. It offers the serious reader a great framework for understanding how this vital part of our culture industry works. For media economists, there are a couple of inventive analyses that apply rational choice theory and audience theory to assess what factors influence assessments of risk (which influences content development and pricing). Even though the audience marketplace is changing fast in response to new media and measurement technologies, the book remains relevant. Well worth it if you want to develop a comprehensive understanding of audiences. Must read for media planners and strategists.

This is a comprehensive must read for anyone interested in how media audiences are generated and sold to advertisers. Napoli efficiently sheds light on the evolution and current developments of an intricate audience measurement process that will make you think differently about the content you consume. Napoli also describes the profound consequences that arise by the way in which marketers value us along the lines of race, gender and class. Despite the rapid pace of developments in measurement technologies, this book still provides a relevant and compelling look at the audience marketplace.

Missing entire sections!

The copy Amazon sent me was missing entire sections, including some important diagrams and figures. There was simply white space where the diagrams were supposed to be. I had to photocopy the pages off of a friend's book. How embarassing!

About the Author
Patricia A. Adler (Ph.D., University of California, San Diego) is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Colorado. She has written and taught in the area of deviance, qualitative methods, and the sociology of children. A second edition of her book, WHEELING AND DEALING (Columbia University Press), a study of upper-level drug traffickers, was published in 1993. She has received many honors, including the Outstanding Teacher in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Outstanding Researcher Award from the University of Colorado. In addition, she was awarded the Mentor Excellence Award in 2004 from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI).

Peter Adler (Ph.D., University of California, San Diego) is Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Denver. His research interests include social psychology, drugs and society, and sociology of work, sport, and leisure. His first book, MOMENTUM, was published in 1981 by Sage. Peter has been honored with the University Lecturer Award and as the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher at the University of Denver, as well as being named by the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI) as Mentor of the Year in 2005.

Nice book, interesting topic. Well put together

Fine as far as textbooks go. The articles are varied and interesting. Also short enough to read easily. The print is small, and it's a little heavy. But not too bad.

I will say that I heavily prefer using e-book textbooks. The savings are great, especially since I never sell the old textbooks. I always mean to, but who am I kidding? Also much easier not to juggle a textbook when you are using a laptop. You have to find a way to prop open and have good lighting to read. With the Kindle for PC, it is easy to copy and paste for notes, annotate or highlight. And it includes footnotes for copy/paste. Bonus to work anywhere in the house without dragging a lamp around. So now I know. Should have done that with this but fine.

The book was in excellent condition. However, while I was at work and my husband was at home taking a nap, our dog ate the top, right corner of the first 70 pages of the book. I just wish I didn't have to pay another $155 to replace the book. :(

Nihonto From The British Museum

This fine volume documents an exhibit of Japanese swords (nihonto) on display at the British Museum circa 2005 (at least, that's when the book was published) along with some background information on nihonto in general. As the authors note, "this book is intended to be a catalogue for the exhibition... and also a guide to the study of Japanese sword blades based on that exhibition."

The book starts with a solid introductory text that covers rough basics about Japanese swords (how they're made, their place in Japanese culture, etc.) and also reviews in reasonable detail a brief history of medieval Japan, along with corresponding changes in sword manufacture over its different eras. This type of information can be found in any of a number of different introductory books elsewhere, but here it has just the right amount of detail on the main epochs of sword making -- Heian, Kamakura, Nambokucho, Muromachi, Momoyama, and Edo. Also included within the intro on a two-page spread is a nice illustration of different characteristics of blades -- kissaki/boshi (tip), hamon ('temper' line), jigane/hada (steel grain), blade cross sections, and nakago (tang) styles. This kind of information can also be found elsewhere, in both more and less detail depending on the book, but it's just about the right amount for the intent of this volume. Even better is a two-pager of representative blades from different eras lined up side-by-side and showing changes in sugata (shape) over time -- unlike other books, they are presented as B&W photos here rather than just line drawings which is very helpful to see defining features.

The real meat of the volume consists of the catalogue listing of the 89 blades from the exhibit. The blades (which include tachi, katana, wakizashi, tanto, and the occasional yari and naginata) are arranged chronologically from when they were made and categorized into Koto, Edo, Shinto, and Shin Shinto eras, with brief descriptions of defining regional traditions and schools (e.g. Bizen, Mino, Echigo, etc.) within those eras, followed by a brief but reasonably detailed description of each exhibit blade (discussing the smith, date of manufacture, sugata, hada, hamon, etc.) and their accompanying koshirae (saya, tsuba, and other fittings). The second section then includes stunningly detailed B&W photos of each blade, both up close so that you can see details of hada and hamon as well as full length shots showing the sugata, tang, and mei (note that all of the blades were brought to full polish prior to the exhibit). In addition, an accompanying photo shows each blade's assembled koshirae -- this British Museum collection seems to have included almost all blades with full mounts. These pages comprise the real strength of the book -- the photos are outstanding and document in rich detail each blade. My only complaint is that there are no color photos of the koshirae, which are obviously ornate with exquisite design and detail, so that B&W doesn't do them justice (though there are about 10 pages of color photos of koshirae elsewhere in the book). Likewise, it would have been nice to see some photos of the unsheathed blades fitted to tsuka and tsuba, but all of the photos are of the naked blade with nagako exposed. Oh, and there is the occasional typo in which the swordsmith listed near the photo doesn't match up with the catalogue description in the text.

Those minor complaints aside, this is an excellent tome that gives a decent introduction to nihonto, and provides a stellar photo-documentary of an outstanding museum grade collection. Aside from the auction books put out by Christie's of the Walter Compton Collection (which are out-of-print, rare, and expensive), I can think of no other English language book that accomplishes this (for less than $25 no less). All in all, an wonderful resource for both the novice who just wants to drool at swords as art, or those beginning kantei (study and appreciation of nihonto) in earnest.

Excellent book

In a very few words, this book is informative to both the newcomer and the more advanced collector. The historical and technical information is authoratative and concise, but the best part of the book are the incredible photos of the blades. These are the best photos I have ever seen, you can actually see the hamons and hadas which are also described in the text. It is extremely difficult to take photos like these, and in many books you can see the blade but not the individual characteristics which actually give the beauty to the blade.

Can geoengineering be re-imagined?

If you go to a library and peruse the shelves of what writers from past decades thought future technologies might be like, you're liable to find some funny stuff. I expect that many of the existing books on geoengineering will be quaintly amusing to library-goers of 2050 or 2100.

This book, however, I expect to have a long shelf-life: it's written not just for the present moment or the next climate conference, but for posterity; it will help future generations understand the deliberations & decisions of this time.

Firstly, it's not plain "science writing"— this "book about the boundaries between physical planets and imagined worlds" is rich with history, & the best passages are literary or philosophical. The earthsystem is evoked as lived dynamic experience: "like wind on the skin, or the tremor in the ground from rushing water nearby, or lightning sensed through shut eyelids..."

That said, there is a lot of accessibly-explained science. I've seen the Mt. Pinatubo powerpoint slide projected more times than I can count, but never fully grasped where climate modeling was at the time of Pinatubo, or understood the contribution of the eruption to climate science, before reading this book. I learned more about the stratosphere here than in 50 lectures on geoengineering; that is, I learned about it in a whole manner— not just stratosphere-as-object or place, but about the human conception of it and how that evolved.

One of the book's gifts is its ability to easily place geoengineering into alignment with history; to tell the broader story — about both the earthsystem, and "men of human empire; the sort of men who can attract the interest and admiration of wealthier and more powerful men." You'll read about imperialism & the opening and closing of the frontier; about the jaded, gilded fin de siecle (lack of) spirit. In a media ecology that doesn't lend itself to seeing events within the broad context of history, this is quite refreshing — this subject really did need a book-length treatment that was more than just reportage. Speaking of grand narratives of history, I appreciate that this book doesn't hang its hat on "the Anthropocene"; it reckons with the term without making it central or a key tag. Smart move.

There's a lot here I sympathize with — for example, the critique that natural and social scientists make the mistake of talking "as though what geoengineering is has already been decided, rather than treating it as something still up for grabs"; the argument that broadening the debate is not just about bringing more and different expertise in, but reimagining it. The comparison to human intervention in the nitrogen cycle was well-argued and compelling.

I do wish the book had discussed gender in relation to its topic, and I'm curious to hear how the scenario near the end is received. The text suffers a bit from the syndrome of nearly all "environmental" books these days: you spend all your chapters tracing the roots and contours of a present phenomenon, and then there's only a chapter left for the future (Morton has made it explicit that the problem / solution framing is not useful here, so I won't use those terms, but it seems like a variation on the classic problem / solution book). Perhaps a companion volume is needed.

Yet my favorite thing about this book is how nestles its utopian dream comfortably in small passages scattered throughout the text — there's no program, no bullet points, no grand utopian design, no grandstanding or ego-driven polemic: just a humble, powerful seed-planting type of strategy to encourage the reader to think & imagine. The basic idea: that exploring geoengineering "could spurt and shape the development of a new way of making planetary decisions", not just to develop a new thermostat, but to develop "a new hand to use it". The basic question: how can the challenge of remaking the planet "be used to bring about a world that could be trusted with the power to meet that challenge"? The simple-machines metaphor of levers and fulcrums used throughout actually works for me — no more spoilers here, though, you'll have to read it, and then, perhaps, be compelled to work with it.

An Important, Thorough, and Difficult Book

This is a book everybody who is interested in climate change should read, regardless of his political opinion. The book is a bit tedious, as is the subject if persued rigerously and thoughly. The subject of climate change presents no simple, easy answers and many, many trade-offs and compromises. This book explores those issues. Early on, the author asks the reader to answer two questions: Do you think human activity impacts the climate? Do you think the problem is difficult to solve? The author posits that most people fall into two groups: the No - Yes group and the Yes - No group. The author and I ane in the the Yes - Yes group which may explain why I appreciate this difficult book.

Informative and optimistic

Engagingly written -- I could hardly put it down! -- comprehensive, thorough, and optimistic without being credulous, this book contains a wealth of information about the "earthsystem" (as Morton likes to call it) and the effects we're already having on it as well as those we could potentially create intentionally. The book makes an excellent case for expanding research into geoengineering, and I hope it gets widely read.

Educational and entertaining

As a lawyer who has practiced for 25 years, I find that it's sometimes difficult to explain to kids (especially my own) what I actually do for a living. Enter Spencer Aronfeld, with Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer. Finally, a book that explains the practice of law in a kid-friendly and entertaining way.

Because I'm the author of The Writer's Guide to the Courtroom: Let's Quill All the Lawyers (Get It Write), I also blog and teach about using the law in writing. I talk about how writers get the law right and wrong in their books and screenplays. This book is definitely safe for lawyers to read to their kids. From the amount of time it takes to become a lawyer to the types of legal practice, Sara Rose gets the details of law practice right. This is a great book for lawyer parents to explain what they do, and for kids who are interested in learning more about being a lawyer.

Great book for great kids!

This book has beautiful illustrations and its put together very well. Im not a pro on children's books but I would say the age for this book is probably more like 7-12 years old. The text is lengthy so its not really for reading to your kid. That being said, its a great book and the money goes to a great cause. The author is doing wonderful things and this book is a great asset to his non-profit organization. The story is excellent and really shows how children can make a difference in this world if they stand up for what they believe in. Highly recommend!

Adorable and well-done

When author Spencer M Aronfeld asked whether I'd be interested in reviewing a children's book about lawyers, I couldn't resist. I had never seen one before and was curious to see how he could pull this off.

Well Aronfeld *does* pull it off. Quite well, in fact.

Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer tells the story of Sara Rose, a little girl who likes to argue. Because of that, people tell her she should be a lawyer when she grows up -- many current lawyers and law students may relate.

But after meeting a real live attorney at her lemonade stand, Sara quickly learns there's a lot more to being a lawyer than arguing, and that even arguing has a purpose. Soon thereafter, Sara sees an injustice at her school and works hard to influence a fair outcome, even learning about the appellate process along the way.

This is a really cute, well-done book that covers an impressive amount of ground in its thirty or so pages. I love that important concepts surrounding the legal profession are broken down into easy-to-understand terms and examples -- and then demonstrated for the reader.

Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer should be in every elementary school library and would make a great gift for that special, perhaps argumentative kid in your life. I'm giving it five stars.

Excellent Guide to Learning

The core ideas in this book aren't dissimilar from those of older books, such as "How to Study" by Swain or "How to Read a Book" by Adler and Van Doren. The essence of the learning techniques isn't very different. This book places the techniques in a specific context, though: school, where the ultimate goal is to get good grades. It presents a strategy for implementing the techniques in a school setting with the joint goals of "maximum grades, optimum learning, minimum time."

I've seen some people complain that the techniques are too time-consuming. The author specifically addresses this problem: "This process is going to take us much longer to follow along than the actual thinking-involved took." In other words, once you practice and get used to the techniques, you won't need to do them explicitly...they will become automatic. In fact, I don't think it's possible to learn _at all_ if you aren't asking many of the questions that Robinson discusses. If you think it's too time-consuming, then you're basically admitting that learning is too time-consuming, at which point you should stop reading and reevaluate your priorities.

I was a senior in college when I picked up this book. I had survived my former years by mainly using techniques from Cal Newport's material, but reading this book, along with the books I mentioned earlier, provided me with a much clearer understanding of what learning is. Newport's books are definitely useful, being more immediately practical. But this book was more challenging and addressed the core problem of learning more directly.

If you want to learn how to learn, especially in a school setting, this book is a great guide. Taking the time to work through the book and struggling to apply the principles to your studies will pay off big time. It will start slow, but persistence will pay off as the material is internalized and becomes second nature. Then you will become an unstoppable learning machine.

Helped Me Extensively

I really like this book because not only did it provide various study tips, it also gave great examples of how to teach yourself. How to teach yourself multiple concepts, ranging from specific subjects to how to take notes from lectures v.s textbooks, etc. I feel my school did not focus on teaching students how to actually ask questions and search for the answers, but more on passing tests and searching for information that the teacher or school wanted to know. With the help of this book, I realized that you can't really understand or attempt to remember the purpose of the information if you don't know why it's relevant or important to know. After struggling my first semester in college simply because I didn't know how to teach myself, I decided I wasn't going to rack up thousands of dollars in student loans just to struggle and get average grades. So I gave this book a try because of the positive reviews and was really happy with my purchase. I use multiple study strategy or tip books as well in conjunction with this book and developed my own working methods. However, the majority of my most effective practices came from this book and I did benefit the most from it. Another thing I enjoyed about this read was it provided suggestions for improving your overall attitude about school and tips to help yourself actually enjoy it and whatever specific subject or task you don't like. If you find specific subjects boring this book can help you find ways to make them fun. If you don't want to put in the effort to be successful, you won't be! The narrator has a practical and frankly, blunt way of stating facts and explains the concepts clearly with a mildly humorous attitude. There are multiple, easy quizzes and exercises that I truly did find helpful, especially if you remain open minded and actually try your best. If you are really struggling with retaining information, reading dry textbooks (or highlighting every other word), having a hard time paying attention in class, or have other issues with school I highly recommend this product.

Advised to go through

This book is really good in a sense a reader feels like the author is with him while reading. It talks about 12 principles of smart students and the benefits of cyberlearning which sounds really noteworthy, I took out one star because the book was written around 1994 which is 20 years ago. Current education system is anyway different than that time. The techniques presented in this book may be hard to apply in real practice as well as some of them tend to be time-consuming.

About the Author
Dominique G. Homberger is a Professor at Louisiana State University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, where she has been teaching for more than 20 years after earning a doctorate from the University of Z�rich, Switzerland and a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University. Well known for her studies on functional, ecological and evolutionary morphology of birds, Dr. Homberger has published two research monographs, numerous articles and book chapters, and four laboratory manuals. She has organized and edited several symposia on various subjects. She is an editor of Zoomorphology and Zoologischer Anzeiger, and a member of the editorial board of Journal of Biosciences. In recognition of her contributions, she has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Ornithologists� Union, and the Association for Women in Science.

Warren F. Walker, Jr., is Emeritus Professor at Oberlin College, where he taught for 38 years after taking a Harvard doctorate. Well known for his articles on reptile anatomy and locomotion, Dr. Walker is the author of seven laboratory manuals and textbooks published in over 30 editions and in several translations. In addition to being the coauthor of Vertebrate Dissection, Dr. Walker is also coauthor of the Brooks/Cole title FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF THE VERTEBRATES, Third Edition by Liem/Bemis/Walker/Grande.

Good but some of pictures are tough to discern

Having taught Comparative Anatomy Lab with this book I would not recommend it to someone who is going through dissection for the first time and alone. A good sense of terms (ie. medial, caudal etc)and such is a must. Even having gone through dissections of hundreds of cats some things are still difficult to find. However I like how it ties things together and shows step wise evolution of vertebrates from lampreys to cats.
