Third novel continues the story well . . . fans of the Federation series will enjoy it

Glynn Stewart's writing style continues to progress and mature with each novel. I have found the Castle Federation series (Avalon) to be an enjoyable read throughout. If you have read the first two books in this series you should enjoy this one as well. I would highly recommend reading them in order, as there are important details about the characters which are developed more thoroughly in those earlier books, and only touched upon here.

With this third novel in the series, Stewart seems to have turned his focus more toward military strategy and tactics, and less about continued character development. He continues the theme of two warring factions in human space: the protagonist Federation as the smaller "breakaway" nation, fighting the larger, antagonistic Earth-centric Commonwealth. The storyline continues to focus on the captain and crew of the Federation carrier Avalon, which is now playing a larger role as part of a fleet assigned to take the war back to the Commonwealth.

It is an excellent space combat novel, without becoming too technical for the average sf reader. Fleet tactics and complex battles involving more ships are the main focus now. The action is engaging. I read the novel in one long sitting because I found it very difficult to put down :-)

Having said all this, I am giving it four stars instead of five, as I feel that that the characters and human elements in this story are not as well thought out as before. It is as if Stewart felt that the people were already well known enough to the reader, and no further explanations were necessary. Each character continues to act exactly as predicted by the background laid down in the previous novels. Everything new in this story revolves around the combat. I found this a bit unsatisfying, because one of the reasons I have so thoroughly enjoyed Stewart's writing in earlier novels (especially The Stellar Fox and Starship's Mage) was how interestingly the characters develop and grow during the course of the story.

However, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent novel, and I can't wait for the next installment!

Just an outstanding series to which I hope there are many more to come.

I normally do not write reviews. I should write more as I read 3 to 5 books a week. That being said this series was excellent. I have not had a series of books in a very long time that I simply could not put down.

The science was interesting. The Story was outstanding. The characters drew me in and kept me intrigued. For the first time in many years I was emotionally sad when one particular character died (since I really didnt see it coming) and that says a lot to me about this series.

Glynn Stewart you sir have now become my "favorite" author after this series. I hope you write many many more books in this series. It is outstanding.

Thank you very much for the entertainment this series provided me.

Mixed Feelings on this one

I enjoy Glynn Stewart's books, but this one's plot seemed a little contrived and as well as the crew knew it's Captain, should never have stood back and not questioned the Captain's behavior. Undermined the enjoyment for the story for me. Still not a bad read, probably better for someone not familiar with the writer's works.

Good if you already know some Jiu-Jitsu

As a Marine Corps Close Combat Instrtuctor, I can tell you that the majority of these techniques work well, and may be learned and applied by anyone. I do, however, beleive that much practical application and sparring/grappling against many different opponents is necessary to become proficient in any fighting art. Nearly ALL of the Marine Corps Close Combat techniques are found in this book. As our system was a collaboration of many SME's (subject matter experts), that has to speak for something. In addition, Wally echos one of my main points to my students, do not ever become subbornly commited to one technique. You must be able to flow from one to another based partly upon your skill, but primarily the actions of your opponent. Great book, although the pictures and descriptions could be better for beginning practitioners. If you are familiar with basic Jiu-jitsu techniques and principles, you should have no problems.

Wally Jay is an original, as well as a Hall of Fame martial arts instructor. This book must be one of the 5 or 10 best martial arts books available. It includes 11 wrist locks, 7 finger locks, 10 arm locks, 5 leg locks, 17 throws, 11 chokes, and 45 self defense moves against strikes, chokes, body grabs, wrist grabs, and arm bars. The step by step explanations are clear, and the large photos are helpful. All you need is a willing partner and you are well on your way to learning Wally Jay's awesome fighting system based on a simple twist of the wrist.

Don't underestimate the simplicity!

The novice may not appreciate the conservation of motion and simplicity that Dr. Jay brings to his technique of Small circle. Effortless effort! The STRENGTH of these techniques are contained in the subtle, minute changes in body position rather than brute force that seems to be the trend of the "pedestrian" martial artist today. If you have personally studied with Dr. Jay, you can appreciate the beauty behind these techniques.A great book to dissect over and over again.

A 400-page memoir from the Quiet Beatle? Can it be? Well, yes and no: only about 60 pages of this earnest tome, originally published in 1980, are devoted to Harrison's recollections of life before, during and (notably) after the Beatles. His memories, which manage to feel fresh and distant at the same time, come to readers via transcripts of his conversations with Derek Taylor (1932-1997), the Beatles press officer and ghostwriter of Brian Epstein's memoir. Harrison (1943-2001) was only in his late 30s when I Me Mine came out-the Beatles had formed, changed music forever and disbanded before his 28th birthday. The rest of this volume consists of photos with whimsical captions ("the author enjoying a cheese sandwich with some friends" is assigned to a picture of Harrison with a sitar) and facsimiles of his handwritten lyrics (including a fairly different version of "Taxman"), each accompanied by a brief explanation (ideas expressed in "It's All Too Much," for example, were inspired by LSD and "confirmed in meditation"). Most of the songs were composed after Harrison's immersion in Hinduism; divorced from their melodies, lyrics espousing love, peace and harmony tend to take on a certain sameness. This volume offers much to Beatles zealots, but for the casual fan, Harrison will likely remain as admirable and as inscrutable as ever. B&w photos and illustrations throughout.

Originally released in 1980, this volume includes some very casual recollections by "the quiet one" about his life, including his Liverpool childhood and interest in music, meeting the other kids who would become the 20th century's most influential band, his fascination with Eastern religions, and more. The book features roughly 50 photos taken throughout his life, but the meat of the book is the more than 80 song lyricsDmany of which are reproductions of his hand-written sheets with corrections intactDalong with background on each. There is also a new introduction by Harrison's widow. For millions of diehard fans, there is no such thing as too much information on the Beatles, so this should circulate well.

'If sales of THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY are anything to go by, public demand for new Beatles product is as strong as ever. While, I, ME, MINE is not strictly speaking a new book, such is its rarity, except at Beatles memorabilia fairs (at vastly inflated prices) that is 400 pages and 200 illustration will be treated asa newly discovered treasure trove of insider detail about the biggest band in pop history.' Barry Forshaw PUBLISHING NEWS 9/8/02 Olivia Harrison is not doing any interviews apart from an American chat show (although there has been a lot of interest from the national press) and we do not have serial rights, so we are concentrating on reviews for I, ME, MINE. Capitol Records released 2 versions of George Harrison's last studio album, "Brainwashed", on 19/11. The memorial concert at the Royal Albert Hall has been covered in HELLO and some nationals.

My Sweet George!

Purchased this copy to replace my original hardcopy which has gone missing. It's been many years since I read the original and I was jonesing for some George after watching Living in the Material World (2011). I would expect every diehard George fan would consider this a "must read", myself included. For the casual fan, as others have written, this is not a true autobiography. It's a collection of memoirs, written by George and pal Derek Taylor. It's a look back into various periods of George's life (starting with childhood through the Beatles and into the late 70's.). In addition to the memoirs, there are the lyrics to his works, in his own hand, along with personal photos that I suspect first appeared in the book.

It's an entertaining, funny and sentimental look into George's life, and the values, spirituality and philosophy that guided him through the late 70's.

This isn't your typical full-monty auto, but it does capture George as George and I couldn't have been happier with it. It really is that simple; if you love George's music, this book is a Soft-Hearted Hana.

A Delightful Read

With characteristic humility, George limits his own narrative to less than 75 pages, the remainder of the book being personal photos and pages of his original lyrics. The stories behind the lyrics are enlightening and definitely helped me understand his songs better.
The entire book is great fun, even as George is serious in tone at times. His well known, deeply held religious beliefs are discussed, but certainly not ad nauseum. He pokes much fun at himself but in the end, says no more than he needs us to know. NOTE: The book was written before John's murder and should be read with that in mind.

Hard for students to follow; text/paragraphs seem incompete and in need of better flow. 5th edition was better. Does not use the english system of measurements, Little data is given for the American population; other pop. are interesting, but we need to focus on the US pop. Limited references; most are his!

About the Author
Lisa Gundry is Professor of Management in the Charles H. Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University, where she teaches courses in Creativity in Business, Entrepreneurship & New Venture Management, and Entrepreneurship Strategy.� She is Director of the Leo V. Ryan Center for Creativity and Innovation at DePaul.� The Center offers programs on creative discovery and business innovation to the academic and business communities.�� Dr. Gundry was awarded the Innovation in Business Education Award in 1997, by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Mid-Continent East Association. She has also received the DePaul University Excellence in Teaching Award.��

Her most recent book is entitled, Breakthrough Teams for Breakneck Times: Unlocking the Genius of Creative Collaboration (Dearborn Pub: 2001, with L. LaMantia). She is also co-author of Blueprints for Innovation, with Charles W. Prather, 1995, Amacom, and Field Casework:� Methods for Consulting to Small and Start-up Businesses, (Sage with A. Buchko, 1996). Dr. Gundry has published numerous articles in journals including, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Human Relations, Journal of Small Business Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Journal of Enterprising Culture, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, and Organizational Dynamics. She conducts research on issues related to innovative processes in organizations, entrepreneurial growth strategies, and creativity in business. Her work has been featured in media such as The Wall St. Journal, Newsweek, Business Week, Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago Business.

Jill Kickul is the Forsythe Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Thomas C. Page Center for Entrepreneurship Richard T. Farmer School of Business Miami University. Dr. Kickul received the 2000 Management Department Teaching Innovation and Assessment Award.� She has taught entrepreneurship internationally for the Helsinki School of Economics (Global Entrepreneurship) and for the International Bank of Asia (Hong Kong MBA Program). Her research interests include entrepreneurial intentions and behavior, strategic and innovation processes in start-up ventures, and, most recently, women in entrepreneurship.��

Dr. Kickul has many publications in entrepreneurship and management journals, including: Journal of Management, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior , Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management, and Journal of Business Ethics.� Within the business community, she is currently working with local and state government leaders in identifying and assisting women entrepreneurs and their organizations create and facilitate new economic growth for their communities.

Huabei Jiang, Ph.D, is J. Crayton Pruitt family professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles and patents. Dr. Jiang is a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), a fellow of the International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE), and a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
