fun easy to understand rules

The rules in this book are easy to understand, and I love that it was available for instant download. We were travelling and playing cards in our hotel rooms at night, and it was great to be able to refer to this to solve small family feuds while playing.

Blackjack Rules Incomplete

Blackjack - dealer must take hit card at least until reaching 17. The book doesn't mention this.

It's important because if a player stands on 13 and the dealer flip the hole card showing a 15 it woud seem that the dealer won. But even though the dealer has the better hand they MUST continue to take hit-cards until they at least reach 17. In the process the dealer may bust . . . . in which case the player would win.

Also, I was a little surprised the book didn't included rules for Texas Hold 'Em Poker as it is very popular.

Good variety but most are in depth to learn

I like the variety of games this book offers but it was frustrating that many of the games had in depth rules and were a little difficult to learn or pick up quickly. It's good if you have the time and patience to thoroughly read through before actually sitting down to play but in the heat of the "which game should we play" moment, it's not my favorite.

A good introduction to category theory

I am the author's grad student so my rating may be biased. Nonetheless I would recommend the book as a comprehensive and well-written intro to category theory. There is a wealth of examples and exercises to motivate discussion and add depth to the material.

Halifax (Shamanic Voices, 1991, etc.--not reviewed) boasts impressive New Age credentials: ex-wife of psychologist Stansilav Grof; former assistant to Joseph Campbell; creator of California's spiritually experimental Ojai Foundation; student of assorted shamans and of Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh (who offers a grateful introduction). During her decades of world travel--her memories here range from circumambulating a sacred Tibetan mountain to eating peyote in Mexico's Huichol Sierras--Halifax has evolved a worldview that rejects what she calls Western society's ``dualistic'' perspective in favor of one that perceives ``a self coextensive with all phenomena.'' Simply ``by being born,'' Halifax contends, we share ``the World Wound''--a state of universal suffering--that we can escape through several paths, or ``Ways'': the Way of ``Traditions''; of ``the Mountain''; of ``Language''; of ``Story''; of ``Nonduality''; of ``Protectors''; of ``Ancestors,'' and of ``Compassion.'' Each Way involves a return to ``the fruitful darkness''--the shadow side of things, found in the root truths of Native religions, in the fecundity of nature, and in the stillness of meditation. Halifax writes of these paths, and of how she's walked them, in loamy, para-poetic prose: ``Mountain's realization comes through the details of breath. Mountain appears in each step. Mountain then lives inside our bones, inside our heartdrum.'' While declarations such as these, examined in reason's cool light, can seem opaque, even wooly-headed, they gather real force as they roll over pages, ultimately offering a warm and potent testament to the author's beliefs and to a life lived vigorously for the sake of the spirit. Not for those enamored of logic and common sense. One of the best books I have ever read

(and I have read a lot of books!) I am on my second reading, and will soon reread a third time, slowly, taking notes and making my own commentary. Halifax's ability to combine a deep understanding of Buddhism, shamanism, deep ecology, the history of civilization, indigenous cultures is unparalleled - and her understanding is not academic, it has been gained through forty-plus years of experience. This is a book to read slowly, several times, meditating, pondering, and experiencing for oneself what Halifax so profoundly points to.

I've loved this book......

....for many years. I read it when I was in high school and the concepts stayed with me (I'm now 54!). This copy was for a friend with whom I am working to start a community based on some of the philosophy shared in the book.

The story may seem far fetched - a utopian society based on unconditional love. But this may not be so far from what can be possible, eventually. There has been a shift in human thinking and consciousness, which is evident in the increasing number of people rising up and protesting the current conditions under which they live. Many people are realizing that the way we've been brought up to think about life and our place in the world, is not the only way to view things. We know that we cannot go on living as we have been. We know that nearly everyone has been living a life of enslavement. We are now shaking off the shackles of that existence and waking up to the reality of how we've been living.

But the question is how do we achieve our goals? The paradigm of using violence to effect change no longer works. It really never did. It only creates more of the same with different sociopaths in charge. You cannot force people to change and adopt new ways of thinking or living. Not in the long run. We need a different path this time. People like Gandhi and Martin Luther King gave us a hint, a clue and an example to follow.

I don't think we will develop into the type of society described in the book. It is a rather rigid system which I don't see people following, but the basis, the major shift from an system of exploitation to one of total support through community, is entirely possible. This is what my friends and I are working on. An existence where people are free to pursue their passions and be supported by the community in which they live. Money will go back to being a tool for the exchange of energy and to help growth, not a tool for enslavement.

We seek to create a community of individuals who live at a higher level of vibration, that of Love or above (528 on the Hawkins scale). The spiritual aspects of the book may also be possible. We can, already, recall past lives. Many people have various psychic abilities. In fact all people are capable of tapping into those abilities, but we've been trained to ignore them and to think ESP is a freakish accident or just imaginary.

We live in exciting times, that's for certain. It's going to be rocky and challenging, but I believe that what awaits us on the other side is going to be amazing and wonderful.

I don't know where the "Fashion" comes from. Nothing fashionable about it....

OMG The best thing I ever read

Back in the mid 80's I read a copy of this book and fell in love with the thought that one person could expand his mind enough to be able to travel spiritually thru time and space. To travel to another existence where true thought was a requirement for self-awareness and was mandatory in order for the individual and the group to grow in personal awareness.

I fell in love with this book back in the 80's. Since then I have lost my copy twice and bought 2 more copies to replace them. I will always have this book in my life. It is a sign to me that yes being on the verge of enlightenment is a great but yet a scary thing to.
