Shh! We Have a Plan, by Chris Haughton

From the creator of Little Owl Lost and Oh No, George! comes a funny, strikingly illustrated story of best-laid plans — and the secret to attracting the birdie.

Four friends creep through the woods, and what do they spot? An exquisite bird high in a tree! "Hello birdie," waves one. "Shh! We have a plan," hush the others. They stealthily make their advance, nets in the air. Ready one, ready two, ready three, and go! But as one comically foiled plan follows another, it soon becomes clear that their quiet, observant companion, hand outstretched, has a far better idea. Award-winning author-illustrator Chris Haughton is back with another simple, satisfying story whose visual humor plays out in boldly graphic, vibrantly colorful illustrations.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—In a gorgeous nocturnal landscape of deep purples and blues, four figures go marching along. The three big ones are holding nets, and the little one trails slightly behind. Suddenly, they spy a bright pink bird in the tree. "Hello, birdie," calls the little one. "Shh," reprimands the first one. "SHH!" hisses the next. "We have a plan," explains the third, holding up a birdcage. They tiptoe towards the bird with hilariously expressive body language until, "ready one…ready two…ready three…GO!" But the bird easily evades them, and the three end up in a tangle while the little one looks on. The scenario and "shhs" repeat, and finally, while the big ones are literally down the creek without a paddle, the little one makes friends. In a breathtakingly rich spread, a flock of colorful, jewel-toned birds appear and drive the schemers into retreat. Echoing the opening, the big ones quick-step along under the moonlit sky, nervously glancing behind them and dragging the little one along. The story seems over, but they haven't quite learned their lesson yet. A masterful delight, this crafty caper has huge kid appeal and a title/refrain that will easily sneak into the family lexicon: shh! We have a plan. This perfect blend of circular narrative, deceptively spare art, and humor becomes a story that kids will want to read at storytime, at home, and to themselves if no adult is handy. Plan to make this title a first purchase.—Anna Haase Krueger, Ramsey County Library, MN

Review
In a gorgeous nocturnal landscape of deep purples and blues, four figures go marching along. ... They tiptoe towards the bird with hilariously expressive body language... In a breathtakingly rich spread, a flock of colorful, jewel-toned birds appear and drive the schemers into retreat. ...
—School Library Journal (starred review)

There’s a bouncy staccato music in the carefully structured text, and listeners will quickly anticipate the patterns and helpfully join in on the repetitions as they root for the little guy who knows better than the big fools. Haugen’s art is original yet easily legible... The temptation to act this out will be almost irresistible, so channel the impulse into an organized (or even semi-organized) performance.
—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (starred review)

With cover art recalling Ungerer’s The Three Robbers and the wry sensibility of Klassen’s Hat books, this is a natural choice for any storytime. A spare, humorous text pairs with blocky, digital illustrations to tell the story... Plan on repeated readings.
—Horn Book (starred review)

Big, blocky shapes and intense hues make the action simple to follow, and Haughton’s text is similarly telegraphic. ... The delicious stupidity of the hunting trio, the purity of heart of their small companion, and the sweet-tempered drama of each page turn make this a classic exercise in picture-book making.
—Publishers Weekly

Haughton’s stylish digital illustrations in chunky patches of color make masterful use of hue and contrast—the jazzy warm-toned birds are vibrant when set against the crepuscular blues of the friends and the woods. With only a few words total, a repeated refrain, and a visually unmistakable plot, this is a great choice for emergent readers or a group storytime.
—Booklist Online

A peace-waging parable, presented with wry minimalism la Jon Klassen or Tomi Ungerer. ... Haughton uses a palette of deep blues and purples for his simple forest scenes; this causes the hunters' googly eyes to stand out comically and also makes the fuchsia, red and orange birds easy to spot and follow. Last seen creeping up on a squirrel, the hunters have plainly learned nothing from their experience…but young readers might. Sure to "net" young audiences, who will definitely root for the birds.
—Kirkus Reviews

It’s one of the best picture books of the year.
—Travis Jonker, 100 Scope Notes

This slapstick adventure (rendered in brilliantly saturated colors) demonstrates that if the best laid plans often go awry, then poorly laid plans don't stand a chance.
—Huffington Post

Many young readers will enjoy the story for its humorous elements while others will nod gently, recognizing its life lessons about the impact of force versus gentleness. The repetitive use of cautionary "Shh"s hissed at the youngster as the gang tries to execute its plans and the moody digital illustrations are bound to make readers feel as though they are moving stealthily through the night.
—Reading Today Online

Delightfully vibrant.

Love at first sight!
By Sara
THE SHORT VERSION: This book is extraordinary: it's elegant in its simplicity, beautiful on the eyes, and is a delightful story that you won't mind reading over and over again. (Thank goodness for that because you know the kids will ask you to!) I highly recommend this book as a gift for that special young person in your life or as an addition to your own library.

THE LONG VERSION: I was in my local bookstore when this book caught my eye from all the way across the room. What appealed to me was the monochromatic design of the cover with its intense color and contrast. As I approached it, and began to flip through the pages, I knew this one was coming home with me.

I was delighted to learn from Chris Haughton's website that this picture book of a hundred words or so took him two years to create from start to finish. There's something to be said for taking your time to produce high quality work like this one.

I really enjoy children's books that have a certain simplicity to them, where all of the words and images have been streamlined. Shh! We Have a Plan definitely fits into this category with a word count of about one hundred. I find there's a certain elegance to anything that can be simplified in this way, much like Apple technology. The natural ease with which you can navigate this book is very appealing.

Even though the pallet begins as monochromatic, the contrast turns it into visual eye candy. The illustrations are straightforward enough that the reader brings his or her own imagination to the story. Are the characters children, a family, friends? Are they Asian? Caucasian? Inuits? Indian? Vikings? Are they boys or girls? I love that Chris Haughton gives his readers credit instead of spelling out every detail of his vision for this book. The characters' faces are delightfully expressive and readers have the opportunity to see themselves in the characters, no matter your gender, age, or racial background.

Enough about the illustrations, what about the story?

The story is clean and straightforward and does not disappoint. I think both children and adults will identify with the scenario. The youngest character is happy to live in the moment and express himself or herself authentically, while the older characters have a socially agreed upon plan. They don't look kindly on the youngest who misses the subtext and doesn't buy in to their scheme. In fact, the objects that the oldest characters are focused on, are the only images in the book that are not in monochrome. The bright, warm colors of these objects focuses your attention where the characters' attention is, yet another stroke of brilliance. Every few pages the author uses a simple set up device to build anticipation so you can't wait to turn the page. Because the words and dialogue follow the characters across the page, they match up with the action, which is a nice effect.

All the details of this book's design were well considered. The end papers, for example, are more than just gorgeous, they are part of the story. They follow the same color scheme and style, but the end papers in the front of the book differ from those in the back of the book based on a turn of events in the story. On the copyright page, the first words are: "Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding." ~Albert Einstein

This quotation lends itself seamlessly to the story, which allows you to reach this gentle conclusion through the actions of the youngest character without "delivering a message". Let's face it, as adults we've all experienced those moments where our youngest expresses a wisdom to us with such clarity that we feel humbled in their diapered, sticky-cheeked presence. This book captures that moment but in an understated way. Also, I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw the book had been typeset in the font, "SHH".

I know... you may be thinking that I'm over analyzing this seemingly simple picture book, but children notice details, even if they don't use words to talk about them. Illustrations are how young children "read" a book. Long before they learn to decode language they are busy decoding the pictures. So in this way great illustrations make great early readers.

Snatch your copy up now before it starts garnering all the book awards so you can say you knew the book way back when...

Toddler glued to the page again
By Jujuberry37
We loved Oh No George, so we got this one from the library in the hope that we will love this one too. It did not disappoint. From the first read, the 2.5 year old was absolutely chuckling, by the end, the words again, again, were said, several more times. Chris Haughton is just pure genius. His illustrations are so simple, but very child friendly, and they just love the sound effects. I read this to our play group and every single toddler sat and listened. That is the sign of one truly engaging read. I won't summarise the story, you will just have to read it.....

Short story line for the little ones with unexpected humor
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
In this book, a little person greets a bird, but the three with him say, "shh, we have a plan." The plan is a way to capture the bird. The little one tries again and again to greet the bird while the others try different ways to capture the bird unsuccessfully. The little one finally has the right idea by offering bread crumbs to the bird. More birds flock to the bread crumbs. When the three people try to capture one of the birds, they get chased off causing them to again change plans.

The text in this book is very simplistic which makes it perfect for the very littlest ones and early readers. The story is full of dry humor. The older ones think they have a smart plan, while it is the little one who knows the best way. The illustrations are very different. Most is colored in hues of blue as on the front cover, but the birds are vibrantly colored. The storyline is very short making this less appropriate for older children who would want more. The final page will leave you laughing.

Ages 3-7. The 6-7 year olds will enjoy the dry humor.

Hardwired (Complete Novel), by Walter Jon Williams

Earth lies prostrate beneath the lash of the Orbital powers, and Earth’s Balkanized nations have no choice but to let the Orbitals plunder their remaining wealth. Below the zone of Orbital control, buttonheads, panzerjocks, dirtgirls, and hustlers scramble for their ticket out of the gravity well.

But now, if the criminal underworld and the guerilla underground can join forces, there is a chance to shift the balance of power— in a war fought on the ground by hardwired commandos, in the air by high-flying deltajocks, and by genius hackers in the neural interface.

As Roger Zelazny said, “Hardwired” is a tough, sleek juggernaut of a story, punctuated by strobe light movements, coursing to the wail of jets and the twang of steel guitars— glittering, nasty, and noble— and told in a style perfectly suiting its content. It has all of my favorite things— blood, love, fire, hate and a high ideal or two. I wish I’d written this one.”

From Publishers Weekly
After his thoughtful, elegant novel Knight Moves, Williams wrenchingly shifts gears for this heavy-metal adventure. It is set with acknowledgement in Roger Zelazny's Damnation Alley, when corporate Orbitals control what's left of a postwar America, now balkanized and armed to the teeth. Ex-fighter pilot Cowboy, "hardwired" via skull sockets directly to his lethal electronic hardware, teams up with Sarah, an equally cyborized gun-for-hire, to make a last stab at independence from the rapacious Orbitals. The story, though, is buried under an elaborate techno-punk style of the sort William Gibson popularized in Neuromancer. In both cases, it is a pose, a baroque nostalgia for Hemingway and film noir; it only plays at nihilism, terror and despair. The best effect is Williams's future version of a brain-scrambled vet: a dead buddy of Cowboy's whose scattered bits and pieces of computer memory now constitute a ragged semblance of a man. Such nuggets are hard to find amid the amplified, rock-'n-roll prose.

One of the best
By Chris Bickford
While this book, like Neuromancer, is one of the founding books in the cyberpunk movement, the two books could not be more different - except they are the same.
That is, Hardwired is a story set in a future dystopia where people are caught up in events that lead to changes that seem beyond the scope of changes that people like them could make. Of course, there are drugs and other fun stuff, a network of computers that are hacked, and large corporations.
Hardwired is different in that it is a much better action story, with the main characters being a street samurai and a panzer driver. Gives the book a much different focus than Neuromancer with a decker as a main character.
And the world is much more alive. Dirtboys and mudgirls are moving, struggling, alive in glorious MOTION.
It's a book that you can immerse yourself in for the hours it takes to read it, blink, stagger outside, and look around at the world, disappointed, because it's not the right world. Somehow, the world of Hardwired is so compelling that you forget for a while our world.
That's about as high a recommendation as a book can get.

One of the most important works of the last 20 years.
By Clifford A. Hicks
Three works define cyberpunk as a genre -- William Gibson's "Neuromancer," Bruce Sterling's "The Artificial Kid" and Walter Jon Williams' "Hardwired."
Of the three, "Hardwired" is certainly the most fun to read.
Williams' writing has always jumped off the page, but none of his other books move quite as fast or quite as gracefully (with, perhaps, the exception of the three Drake Maijistral books) as "Hardwired."
A chugging, gut-wrenching, pulse-pounding juggernaut of a book -- if you haven't read "Hardwired," you haven't even started understanding modern sci-fi.
This is cyberpunk at its best.

Easily the best cyberpunk
By David Koski
Hardwired is about a panzerboy called Cowboy and a dirtgirl/assassin named Sarah and their unlikely alliance. The megacorporations that rule the earth from orbital platforms don't care too much about what goes on as long as they continue to gain in power and wealth. Sometimes the people being stepped on don't like it, but what can they do? They may not be as helpless as the people in charge think.
The setting reminds me of Blade Runner, but maybe a bit grungier. The characters are well crafted and convincing. The plot is gripping, and the writing flows off the pages.
This books is from 1986, so it is not the same stale cyberpunk junk that you may be used to. Check it out!

"NEW" purchase from Amazon does not contain all items listed by the Publisher
By Andrew Todd Witbeck
Hello!

I am using this review to let others know of a product issue that I encountered.

Pearson education says that NEW copies of this book come with an Access Code. To allow buyers access into their online portion of the classes and/or online resources. The "NEW" copy of this book, when purchased directly from Amazon, does not come with this code. When I asked about it, the representative claimed that the code "was not part of the features listed".
While this is true, I want to make sure that others do not buy this new thinking that the code comes with it.

It is, BY FAR, cheaper to buy a used copy, and then purchase a new code directly from Pearson.

The only other option is to buy the new book, and then buy a code as well. no point in paying more for nothing extra.

Thanks for your time and I hope this review helps!

OK for someone with no electrical / electronic training
By DennyC
About two thirds of this book is dedicated to general electrical and electronic training. If you already have that training (as I do), then you should look for another book that deals more with its automotive applications.

Required textbook for not one but two of my automotive classes.
By NLWPS of Amherst
This is the required text for my Automotives Electronics class as well as a future class so it was a good investment to buy it. My instructor adores this textbook series by James D. Halderman. He uses the power point presentations in class. Some of the pictures are... inaccurate to the point of being either extra funny or downright dangerous from a safety standpoint but my instructor is careful to point these things out to us. We all assume this is because the artist isn't actually an automotive tech.
