About the Author
Constance Staley is a Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, where she has directed the First-Year Seminar Program for nearly 25 of her 40 years in higher education. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Staley is the author of a multimedia training package for first-year seminar instructors, as well as the ground-breaking resource manual 50 Ways to Leave Your Lectern. A well-known name in FYE circles, Staley is a leader in faculty development nation-wide. During a three-year leave from the University of Colorado, Dr. Staley joined an East Coast Fortune 500 company to design and deliver its management and supervisory training. She also represented the university as a Fulbright Fellow, teaching in the former Soviet Union in 1996. Dr. Staley earned a B.A. in education from Ball State University, and an M.A. in linguistics and Ph.D. in communication from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Really helpful for returning students.

As long as people understand this book is more geared towards people that have not just graduated from high school I think they will find this helpful. If you are simply coming straight from HS you will likely find this material to be common sense. If I had this book when I did transition from the military to college than I would have gotten actual use out of it instead of taking an easy class. This book will give you the basic tools you need to get back into an academic lifestyle. It can be an anxious time for most and this book help alleviate most concerns.

The late Romare Bearden, a premier African American artist in his own right, devoted 15 years to researching and writing this magnificent study of the lives and achievements of 36 significant African American artists born prior to 1925. He and longtime friend and coauthor Henderson were motivated by frustration over the lack of literature on black artists. Through great perseverance and determination, they managed to track down forgotten artwork, piece together vivid biographical portraits, and conduct interviews with surviving artists, who, in spite of their stature and longevity, had never before been interviewed. As Bearden and Henderson set the scene, historically speaking, for such artists as Robert S. Duncanson, Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner, they expose the degree to which racism limited opportunities for black artists. The life stories of the artists associated with the Black Renaissance during the 1920s--such as Aaron Douglas; Archibald Motley, the first painter to boldly celebrate urban African American society; and sculptor and influential mentor Augusta Savage--are recorded with consummate insight, as are accounts of the giants of the Depression era, Beauford Delaney and Jacob Lawrence. nice book

i had a class in college that used this book as a text book. ienjoyed it then, but it wasn't until later that i really had a chanceto sit down and enjoy it. information is good and the pictures are plentiful. this is a very nice book for anyone interested in african american art and culture. another book that i would like to recommend is called souls grown deep: african american vernacular art of the south, volume one. i bought it at an art fair in new york in late january. i'm not sure that it has been released nationally. i've contacted amazon in an attempt to get more info. i have it so i know it is out. this type of book (souls and the history...) are too few and far between.

A Priceless Treasure

This is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. As an avid reader, I do not make that claim lightly. What makes this book so remarkable is how Bearden and Henderson both bring the artists to life and give you a deep appreciation for their work.
No other book I've read on the arts has left me similarly breathless. While many of them have been quite competent at explaining things like "Impressionism," "The Renaissance," or "The Harlem Renaissance," none have so beautifully balanced an explanation of the artist and of the artist's work. By bringing the people to life, Bearden and Henderson have brought the art to life. They have made a priceless contribution to our understanding of African-American artists, their work and the challenges they had to overcome to pursue their passion.
This book is a must-have. It will deepen your appreciation of art and of the contributions that African-Americans have made to it.

Just WOW!!

I found the first book in this set for free and figured why not. I'm so glad I decided to read it. I enjoyed it so much that buying the next two was a no brainer. I bought the boxed set which was a better deal than buying them separately, and it was totally worth the money. I truly enjoyed reading about the lives of all the characters and was actually sad that I'm now done. Ann has done a fabulous job at making the characters relatable and you just fall in love with how they all interact with each other!! Please go out and get yourself these books.

Love triangle that works!

This is fun, easy reading with a creative concept and well fleshed out characters. I was up all night reading this one. I don't normally like love triangles, but this one worked, and the heat-level made this a set I'll save for re-reads...when the mood strikes ;) The Davis twins are wonderful, and this is a great introduction to Ann Omasta's writing. I look forward to reading more!

BRAAAAP BRAP BRAAAP no STUTUTUTU

Upon purchasing my 3000GT SL, it was as if a whole new world opened up in my eyes—the petrolhead culture. Famous for the Japanese domestic market and American muscle fued, all while German and Korean engineering take a step back in their own territory and style of cars. Not even a few hours in after I began to drive my car home, I stumbled upon a souped up ’06 WRX STI, revving his engine next to me at a stoplight and flashing me a cliché Fast and Furious look. “Yoooo, is that twin turbo?” he snarked. “No I wish,” I said, hesitantly. Being that he seems like the typical egotistical show-off, I was almost tempted to make a knock-knock joke, since Subaru’s have the tendency to have engine knocking. Right as he did a burn-out in front of me, it irritated me enough to intentionally turn this daily driver into a racecar, and show him up the next time if he ever came my way.
Browsing upon the various workbooks and textbooks in Amazon, I came across this workbook, loaded with 4 star ratings and a reasonable price of $21.03. It took a swift three days to arrive to my apartment, and there it bestowed upon my doorstep in a sturdy envelope. With eager eyes, I proceeded to peruse through the whole book, scanning for the pages that described the typical additions to your car that would make your car insurance cringe. Blow-off valves, turbochargers, superchargers, coilovers, air-bag suspension systems, cold-air intakes, limited slip differentials, roll cages—none were apparent in this book. My heart broke a little bit. I was hoping to refer to this book, rather than cramming episodes of Mighty Car Mods on youtube into my brain. Then, after giving this book a chance by working through the problems, along with the critical thinking scenarios presented in this book, it redeemed itself to me. The authors really meant it when they say it provides the “fundamental” aspects in auto mechanics. I may have learned my share in working and fixing cars with my dad, but it delved in depth on the thermodynamics that occur in things such as the four stroke cycle of an engine, and what the process occurs in catalytic converters. This workbook even went so far as to name off typical troubleshooting problems that the everyday driver encounters, like that annoying high pitch sound that just won’t go away, no matter how many times you take apart and put back together your car. Although this workbook didn’t give me the skills to turn my car Superstreet Magazine worthy, it assisted in helping me brush up on my maintenance skills.
This book is for your average Joe, who wants to know more about what’s under the hood of your car in detail, with analogies and quizzes to better help with retention of the information presented. If you’re a petrolhead trying to further expand your knowledge--who can easily tell the difference between a Magnaflow and a grossly welded on lawn mower exhaust system--this book may be child’s play compared to what you currently know. Overall, it is a good workbook, and I would definitely reference this again, paired with my manual if little things like my alternator bearings or timing belt isn’t exactly the way it should be.

Great basics!

I'm a girl. I say this only to illustrate the fact that, although my Dad and stepbrother restore cars, my stepdad was a Cadillac mechanic and my brother went to WyoTech, I was not taught anything other than how to jump a vehicle and change a tire.

This book starts with the very basics. How awesome! This may be tiresome for some readers, but it really helped me to understand what an engine does and how all the parts actually worked together. It is Fundamentals, after all.

I have been supplementing the text with websites and actual questions and demonstrations from the men in my life, and I am getting a pretty good grip on things. Now I can check all my fluids, change my own oil and filter, and know how to bleed the brakes. My 454 threw a rod, so we replaced it with a 350, and I learned about automatic vs manual transmissions, and engine 'anatomy.' This book helped my feel not quite so much like a dummkopf in the garage!

Wow. This book has it all! TJ's stories and ideas are a refreshing new look at life, both in and outside of the workplace. Finally, a motivational/leadership book written by the everyman. TJ seems very authentic with his caring ways, and it is inspiring to see how he has overcome his adversities through life.

Incredible lessons for leadership and life!

This book is a testament to good leadership in all aspects of one’s life. TJ’s passion for people and making sure they are realizing their goals is infectious! This book points out all the ways we all give in to the grind and forget about the things that really matter in life; the people we connect with every day. TJ’s anecdotes help show examples of where being a Caring Warrior is not only helpful, but necessary. This book helps bring back the “human” in our being. Clearly TJ’s strength is leadership skills, but more than that, his strength lies in connecting with people. He clearly shows that it is important to care about who we are, what we do, and all the ways we connect in this world. The world would be a better place if we all picked up the sword of the Caring Warrior!

Its OK

I was not thrilled with this story, Its well written in many ways but I was not happy with the female nor the male Character. No Spoilers but she is a push over that if her chosen career is supposed to be true it does not fit. He comes across as a dick and a douche. I read this all the way through and have read biker stories in the past and this one falls flat in my opinion.

A well-written, clean romance that concludes well but, is a camouflaged cliffhanger-style story.

I rated this a 4-star because I enjoyed the tone and flow of the story, liked the characters and, I very much appreciated that there were no graphic descriptions of violence or sex nor vulgar language (especially for a MC story).
The reason that I didn't rate this a 5-star is because, while this story has a conclusive ending, it's actually a continuing story (or, camouflaged cliffhanger). Which means, I may never discover how things play out on the path to the happily-ever-after because I don't chase after unfinished tales.
Because I did enjoy the story, I'd recommend it.

Really great story.

Two friends, that are also neighbors , come back from war and go to the police academy. One drops out two weeks before finals and graduation. The other graduates and joins the police task force. Two years later one is an Iron Tornadoes M C member and the other us dead.
The story has just the right amount of mystery suspense and love to keep you interested..

About the Author
Peter M. Bernstein received his master's in Social Psychology, Department of Sociology, from San Jose State University and his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from International University. He completed a professional certification program in Reichian therapy with Gerald Frank, DC, and received post-doctoral recognition from the American Psychotherapy Association as a Diplomate and Fellow. Fomerly the Clinical Director of Center Point Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs, Dr. Bernstein has been in private practice since 1974 as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and is the founder and director of the Bernstein Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy and Trauma Treatment. He is the creator of Reichian Myofascial Release Therapy (RMFR), a new modality to treat physical and emotional pain and trauma. Dr. Bernstein is the author of numerous published articles and has led a wide variety of workshops for professionals, including resiliency and secondary trauma training for case workers and clinical staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs. He helped found and continues to be the moving force behind Sonoma Coast Trauma Treatment, a non-profit foundation dedicated to healing combat-related trauma for veterans, service members and their families. Perfectly put!

This book is excellent. I have suffered from trauma in my life an have always been confused in HOW it effected me. Although I always knew there was a definite effect. This book is written so well, an so easy to read. It is by far one of the best books I have ever read on the subject. I know some people have a hard time " gearing up " to read wordy, self help books or books relating to the human psyche. At only 118 pages what do you have to lose? I suggest this to anyone suffering from Trauma or anyone with a loved one who suffers. I think it gives the reader insight into the how/why the people they love behave the way the do. Just a ton of insight into how these types of experiences effect us and the ones we love. Thank you Dr. Bernstein. I am beyond grateful for this book.

readable and practical, a book to pass along to others

Dr. Peter Bernstein has written a clear and helpful primer on the subject of trauma. His declared focus for the book is "to help the average person better understand trauma and what steps can be taken to heal from its devastating effects" (p. i). He cites examples from his practice as a psychotherapist for over forty years, as well as his own personal experience with trauma, to illustrate the nature of trauma—its causes, symptoms, and long-term destructive effects on the lives and relationships of those subjected to sudden or developmental injuries. Dr. Bernstein makes a good case for the need for healing the body as well as the mind from the effects of trauma, as energy trapped in the body during the stress response seeks release in various dysfunctional ways. His treatment solution combines talk therapy with body massage and stretching that specifically targets muscles and fascia where toxic energy has been trapped, an adaptation of traditional Reichian therapy he calls Reichian myofascial release therapy (RMFR).

A unique feature of the book is its particular emphasis on the traumatic injuries sustained by our military personnel and tragically overlooked in a vast number of cases. Emotional and psychological harm sustained in combat or in the hyper-vigilance necessary to stay alive in a war zone remains trapped in the body and causes confusion and misery for those men and women returning home and attempting to reenter civilian life. Dr. Bernstein puts forth a passionate and convincing argument that their families, and society as a whole, will benefit from giving these injured veterans immediate and compassionate treatment for their invisible wounds.

I recommend this book for anyone who suffers from the lingering effects of unresolved trauma (and who does not?) as well as friends and loved ones of those who have been traumatized. The author goes into enough detail to thoroughly explain the mechanism of trauma and the interconnectedness of one's mind, body, spirit, and psyche, without overwhelming the lay reader. Moreover, he offers practical treatment options supported by real case successes from his professional practice.

Paul Conroy is a former British soldier. As a photographer and filmmaker whose work spans 15 years, he has reported on the conflicts in Iraq, Congo, Kosovo, Libya, and Syria.

1.���� How do you settle the tension between covering situations like the one in Homs, Syria and leaving your family behind?
My family has been incredibly supportive of my career as a photojournalist covering conflict. That isn’t to say they haven’t suffered in many ways. It’s a very fine line to walk and, has in many ways, had a very detrimental effect on my relationships. My family understands the reasons I do such work, and my children have grown up watching me pack bags and disappear for months on end but, with every war it gets harder for both them and me. However, after a few months back at home they, rather cheekily, ask, “What are you still doing here?” I know they are proud of what I do and I hope that I have instilled in them the curiosity to question the accepted norms and never to accept anything at face value, especially war.

2.���� When working with other journalists such as Marie Colvin, you all witness first-hand the horrors of war. How do you prevent yourselves from becoming entirely disheartened? What drives you forward?
When Marie and I arrived in Homs at the height of the Syrian armies bombardment of the town, we both agreed that it was the worst shelling we had ever witnessed. It is those extremes that push you forward; neither of could walk away from the situation. It was mass slaughter and it simply reminded us of what we did and why we were there. On the night before Marie’s death we were both shivering, wrapped in our blankets whilst undergoing continual artillery bombardment, when Marie turned to me and asked, “If you weren’t being paid would you still be here,” “Of course,” I replied. She simply smiled saying, “I knew you would say that.” Even at that point we believed we could make a difference.

3.���� What made you decide to write this book? Was your experience in Syria something you always knew you would ultimately write about?
I had never considered writing a book about Syria. When I set off it was just another job—I was there to take pictures as part of a team. I’m not sure I even took a pen. It was only when I was back in London that the idea for a book came up, and I was lucky enough to be asked to write about it when my agent Annabel Murello approached me. I was on a lot of heavy-duty painkillers at the time and thought it would be a good thing to do. I had a very large hole in my leg and I thought it wise to do something.

4.���� Was it difficult for you to revisit your experiences with Marie in Syria as you wrote this book? Or did you find it a cathartic experience?
On the whole I found it a very cathartic process. I relived every minute of the whole assignment in great detail, forcing myself to remember every moment in order to avoid burying memories that may come back to bite me in the future. Over the course of writing the book, I took great comfort in the fact that I was bringing Marie back to life for potential readers. It was as if, for a just few months, she was back with me. I would laugh out loud at her jokes and titter to myself as I remembered her quirks and foibles. The worst part was writing the chapter when the house was attacked and Marie and Remi were killed. For months I had them back with me but, inevitably, in my mind I now had to kill them again. I put it of for a week or two, but one morning I woke and wrote that chapter in one sitting.
In many ways writing the book was was like a gentle letting go of Marie, a long but sad farewell, not the short brutal horror in the ruins of Baba Amr where I never h

Under the Wire is an Assignement Well Done!

War. It terrifies us. It freezes our very souls. Yet, through our better angels, it can call us to bear witness to its inhumanity and speak out against the carnage while giving voice to those silenced by the vacuum of destruction and death through words and images. War correspondent Marie Colvin was one of those better angels for whom hundreds could tell their stories, and it was through the masterfully told book "Under The Wire: Marie Colvin's Last Assignment", that her fellow war journalist and close friend, Paul Conroy, bears witness for her, lost friends, and comrades born of war. In a gripping and all too real adventure, Conroy takes us from the relative tranquility of a Beirut bar into the coldly calculating meat grinder of Assad's ongoing war; a war which knows no distinction between rebel or child or, ultimately, journalists.

Paul Conroy is a freelance photographer, who often works for the British newspaper, The Sunday Times. It is his job to convey to the world the frozen images in the mists of survival against an onslaught of unimaginable ferocity. In doing so, Conroy shows the world both the savagery of war and the human will to persevere. Marie Colvin was an award winning correspondent for The Sunday Times and author who covered the killing fields of Chechnya, Timor, Libya, and Sri Lanka, where she lost an eye and gained an eye patch and solidified her near mythical no holds barred reputation as a world class journalist. Great story, terrible book.

I don't often write reviews but in this case I felt I had to offer a balance to the baffling amount of 5 star reviews this book received, because a couple of chapters in I was annoyed that I'd been encouraged by them. I can only imagine they were given by friends and family of the author.

Here's the thing: Under The Wire is a great story but a terrible book. It's difficult to criticise it without feeling mean-spirited because Paul Conroy is undoubtedly a brave and well meaning guy. But Paul is a photographer not a writer and that fact becomes apparent very early in. To be fair the blame for how bad this book is has to be shared 50/50 with whoever is supposed to have edited it.

Here's a quick run down:

Pros:
- Clever jumping back and forth through time and places to build up back story.
- A gritty insight into the horrors of modern day war.
- The story of brave people trying to do the right thing.

Cons:
- Utterly dreadful childishly bad writing that distracts from what should be a compelling story.
- Paul "constantly" "tirelessly" "frequently" overuses adverbs that break up the flow of the narrative.
- There's no insight into the repercussions of Marie Colvin's death.
- I don't believe any conversation in this book happened as described. For some bizarre reason, when people talk to each other, they all call the person they're talking to by their first name. EVERY time. EVERY person. EVERY conversation.
"Paul do you think it's safe here?"
"Marie I don't know what to say"
"Wa'el how are you?"
"Paul I'm fine today"
"Marie we are getting into the car now"
"Paul I'm good"
(Not actual conversations from the book!) It's completely jarring and irritating and ruins the flow every time.

- Just bad bad writing, trying to be poetic with incomprehensible descriptions. Childishly bad stuff:

Here's an actual paragraph from page 177:
"We continued on our cross-country route as the sun bade us it's daily farewell. Slowly, with the silent and stealthy movement of a cat stalking it's prey, we were robbed of vision. Night fell upon us and with the darkness came the fear. It wrapped its invisible tentacles silently around all of us in the vehicle. No one spoke. The night belonged to the hunter and the hunted."

Page 253:
"What?" I replied in shock. The news was like a smack in the face, so powerful we're the words that tumbled from their lips."

Page 277:
"I'm sure I could have dismissed the whole affair as a rather quirky dream. Sadly, this wasn't the case and, just when I thought I had seen it all, there was more to come."

- Weird continuity errors: on one page he's walking down the street in winter, a few paragraphs later he's talking about how it's an autumn day.
- Constant childish talk about how much he loves cigarettes. There's "lovely" cigarettes in every chapter. Rarely have anything to do with the story, he just likes taking about cigarettes. A lot.

To sum up: Paul is a great guy, a brave photographer and an admirable human being but he is one of the worst writers I have ever read and this a painfully bad book to read. It's an amazing story but it should have been written by someone else. Ultimately the editor/publisher has a lot to answer for, bad editing and shameful use of Marie Colvin's name to sell Paul's bad writing. Absolutely not a 5 star book.

Incredible true account of a personal as well as a national tragedy tempered by the strength of the human spirit

A good friend of mine, familiar with the Syrian situation recommended this book & told me to buy it. I'm so glad she did. A narrative that grabs you from the first page & does not let go at all. A true modern adventure showing the best and worst of the human spirit. Read it and open your eyes . Do yourself a favour !!
