In a small book replete with exercises and questions, case studies and anecdotes, Brenda Bence just may steal my customers. As a coach for small businesses, I am always looking for materials and new approaches to use with my clients. In Smarter Branding Without Breaking the Bank: Five Proven Marketing Strategies You Can Use Right Now to Build Your Business at Little or No Cost, Bence not only offers new materials, she does my job for me. I tried the exercises myself as I read, thinking that I could gauge their effectiveness and polish up my own brand a little. I came away with a much better understanding of my own brand, and how to publish it to others. I will use the approach in the book with my clients. (I may even tell them about the book!)
Seriously, if you can't afford a branding coach - my rates are low enough you could probably afford me! - then this is the one book to buy. A different take on mafia romance

I have read about the Russian mafia and arranged marriages before but not within the same story line. There is something to be said about characters who embrace and live in the dark. The ones who don't try to seek out the light.The fact that Vine was already acclimated to the mafia life, cut a lot of red tape and dropped us right into the meat of the matter.

Where we went from there though balanced the line between cheesy and good. There were good and boring moments but by the end, I was fully invested, especially after that cliffhanger, soap opera-esque ending.

There were a few stagnant areas that were filled with mindless, detailed sex scenes that did nothing for me or the story line and I found that I preferred their conversations and banters to the sex. They aren't your usual couple, pairing or individuals and that made for an interesting story.

The Anton we meet is barely Russian, despite being 100% born and bred Russian. There were times when I had to be reminded that he is a Russian mob boss. He came off as an American hitman, as oppose to Russian royalty, but I didn't mind. He was honest and sure in what he wanted and the Russian came out when he got angry enough or business needed to be conducted.

Vine's personality changes with the different stages of her life but one thing remains the same and that is her knowledge and acceptance of the life. She acts accordingly without being a boss herself or inserting herself into Bratva and Cosa Nostra business. She is the perfect mob wife.

Some would say that this story lacks a good dose of Russian and Italian culture but I think it was dispersed in just the right amount for an introduction. It was focused and didn't stray with mindless explanations to cover space, even when the transitions became messy, as you tried to decipher Anton's from Vine's POV.

Still, I found myself confused and unsure in the middle, as I tried to decipher the big secret and ascertain the main underlying point of the novel. The climax didn't help much in the way of excitement, as it was rather mellow, much like the rest of the novel and didn't appear until the last 20%.

Even in my confusion, I was hanging on to every page of this novel. It was straight forward, clean and balanced in it's delivery. There wasn't an excess of cheesy mafia or romantic moments. There was a lot more history than present and the future looks filled with possibilities but this installment got me grounded in the idea of Vine and Anton and believe me when I say that I am already ready to get my hands on book 2.

So, loved Bethany's Lynked and dived eagerly into this. It starts with a kidnapping and a bang – from a gun - and a murder, so the Mob angle is introduced very quickly. Vine though doesn't realise that she's being kidnapped to save her life, and doesn't cooperate, so receives a bit of rough justice from one of the kidnappers. This doesn't go down well with Anton, who'd given orders Vine was to be unharmed, and displeasing the Bratva Boss isn't something you want to be doing.....
There's a lot of violence in this book, and a lot of very hot, erotic and sensual sex scenes. Vine is annoyed at first that she's had to leave the life she had mapped out, and marry Anton as originally planned. She thought when her father died and his brother took over as boss, that the plans were off, as she went from being Princess to a nobody.... Anton though fell in love with her at first sight, and for him Vine is his intended wife, and he'll do anything to protect her.
I liked Vine, she'd been brought up in a tough world where violence was everyday life, and then she spends more time with Anton, who shows her that he can love her, be the Boss and keep work away from home. It's something her father never did, and that caused her a great deal of grief when young, and afraid of where she was allowed to go and what she might see.
Anton is young, but one of those born to be a leader, and has the respect of his men. They fear his justice,but know he's fair, and isn't Boss just by heritage but by being the best person. I loved the way he was so in love with Vine, the way bits of their past history came out, the way he did everything he could to help her settle into the role she needed to be. His old flame – Forget her name– but daughter of another Boss, was determined she was going to be his wife, even though he'd never let anyone expect more than the odd, one off session with him. And he'd has lots of those but she thought she was more....I loved the way Vine stood up to her, and to be honest I’d have liked to see her play a bigger role. I do love the bad bitches in a romance, those determined to cause trouble :) the secret too, that was hinted at and tantalised in front of us. I just knew somehow that when things came out it was going to be huge, and cause problems. Its one of those were you can see trouble brewing but not sure how it can be avoided. Anton was trying to do his best not to hurt her, knew she had to know,but I felt he was a bit scared of what it might mean for their relationship when it came out. I thought the way it did get known worked really well, very realistic.
What I did struggle with though, and what’s dropped this down from a five star is that for at least the first half of the book I felt there was little actually happening, Vine had been taken, accepted her part, fallen in love – it was all very slick and smooth and lacked drama for me. Once the drama did heat up it was perfect, and we got the secret revealed and then more drama built on to that and it made for an exciting erotic read rather than the sexy but a tiny bit slooow that it had been so far :( Until the big reveal it felt a bit like Vine and Anton have sex again, and again but in a different place, and yet again somewhere else. It was as if nothing much else was going on. It's priced at �3.29 for 319 pages on kindle so has the length to get fully into the plot and characters.
Stars: well, second half definitional five, but that slow start brought it down for me to a four. Its a very sensual,risqu� read though all the scenes fit well within the storyline.

A look into the steamy world of organized crime

The Arrangement took me by surprise. This book, the first in a trilogy with our hero and heroine at its heart, sets up the story of Anton and Vine. It is a well-developed suspense story diving into the underbelly of mob life, pitting members of the Cosa Nostra against the powerful Russian mob. Essentially, the story deals with a betrothal between the daughter of the Don, and the heir to Russian mob throne. The future bride, Vine, is in danger, and the groom, Anton, races to her rescue in an unusual fashion-- he kidnaps her. The story took a twist when I realized that these two had had a relationship years ago, one that had stayed with them both. The sex is hot,and the story sizzles. There are more than enough erotic moments to satisfy,and watching sexual attraction grow into lasting love amidst the violence of the crime world, kept me glued to the book. Ms. Kris has a strong voice and a great writing style. I felt as if I was part of the action. The ending is really the beginning for Anton and Vine and I can't wait to read what happens to them in the living on the cutting edge of the law. I'm sure The Life, book two in the series will be as exciting and full of suspense as book one. I can't wait to see how things turn out for Vine and Anton--happy for now? Yes, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?

In 1940, a young Harvard-educated American named Varian Fry, inexperienced and not at all certain that he possessed any courage, went on a secret mission to Marseille. There, with only three thousand dollars and a list of names, he was to help those who had fled Nazi Germany and were now trapped in southern France.

The list he took with him had been prepared by, among others, the Museum of Modern Art and Eleanor Roosevelt. It included most of the premier writers, painters, and scientists of Europe, many of them Jews—people like Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, Jacques Lipchitz, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Arendt, Franz Werfel, Andr� Breton, Andr� Masson, and other sur- realists, and hundreds more. When Fry witnessed their plight, he became determined not just to give them immediate aid but to find ways for them to escape. Slowly he built up a group of people who could help, forging passports and finding secret paths across the Pyrenees into Spain and then to Lisbon.

Fry himself was constantly in great danger, but he seemed to experience a divine inspiration, achieving greatness and glimpsing immortality by acting as the hero he never thought he could be. His own government tried again and again to stop him and send him home, but he managed to continue his rescue operations for more than a year.

Only in the past decade has the world begun to honor Fry, who died in 1967. He is, for instance, the only American honored at Israel’s Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem, as one of the “Righteous Among the Nations.”

Using letters and records unavailable to anyone else, as well as interviews with numerous survivors, Sheila Isenberg has given us an inspiring story of how the brave and determined actions of one individual can help change the world.

The only American to be honored at Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust Memorial), Fry saved the lives of thousands of refugees from the Nazis. Isenberg, a professor of English at Marist College (Women Who Love Men Who Kill), delivers a moving, workmanlike account of Fry's heroics. During the late '30s Fry, a Harvard-educated editor, journalist and teacher who was radicalized in 1935 when he witnessed Nazi troopers beating Jews in Berlin, wrote New York Times articles concerning the worsening situation in Europe, but didn't manage to increase public awareness. Under the auspices of the Emergency Rescue Committee, an organization of leftist journalists, religious leaders and activists, Fry traveled to Marseilles in August 1940 with $3,000 and a list of refugees, primarily Jewish, stuck in Vichy France, without money or visas. Isenberg details how, under cover of a humanitarian relief center, Fry helped well-known figures such as Marc Chagall, Andr‚ Breton, Hannah Arendt and many lesser-known people sneak across borders and escape. But his evident na‹vet‚ and combative personality sometimes worked against him: mistakenly assuming that most Americans would support his efforts, he alienated officials in the American Embassy who were unsympathetic to the plight of Jews and was forced to return home after a year. Fry's later years were marked by unhappiness in his personal life (he divorced his first wife and had a tempestuous relationship with the second) and destructive political disagreements with former colleagues. Isenberg ably renders prewar and war-time public ignorance and apathy in America and the extraordinary heroism of the sole volunteer for a dangerous rescue mission. Agent, Elizabeth Kaplan. Isenberg's (English, Marist Coll.; Women Who Love Men Who Kill) biography of Varian Fry is part of a developing trend in Holocaust studies to focus attention on "rescuers." Fry, recently the subject of a Showtime docudrama, served as the point man of a New York-based rescue committee that helped a number of prominent European intellectuals and artists, such as Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt, reach the United States after the fall of France in June 1940. Isenberg describes Fry as a man driven later in life to achieve recognition for his efforts. After the war, he was unable to secure steady employment or maintain a stable family life, which Isenberg links to an obsession with his wartime experience. Although Isenberg provides ample context, describing the politics of U.S. immigration and the problems faced by those helping refugees escape from Hitler's Europe, she also periodically goes into excessive detail, at one point even telling us when Fry changed his shirt. Varian Fry, the only American honored at Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial, played a crucial role in rescuing more than 1,000 European refugees from the Nazis in the early 1940s. With his Emergency Rescue Committee, Fry rescued Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Hannah Arendt, Heinrich Mann, and other intellectuals, political activists, and what the Nazis called "degenerative" artists, many of them Jews. Yet, up until the late 1990s, few in this country had heard of Fry. This highly readable biography tells the exciting escape stories of the underground railroad he organized to lead refugees from southern France across the Pyrenees to freedom. Isenberg sets the rescue story against the background of American isolationism and anti-Semitism at the time, documenting her dramatic narrative with more than 70 pages of fascinating notes, including references to letters, interviews, personal papers, and government reports. History That Reads Like A Novel

This is the story of a real-life hero, Varian Fry, who saved hundreds of people, including Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, and Heinrich Blucher, from the jaws of the Holocaust. It is a real accomplishment for the author to have taken this enormous compendium of names, dates, facts, events and interviews and fashioned them into a story as compelling as any page-turner.
It is a gripping tale of heroism. I wanted to know at each juncture how it would all resolve and was rooting for Fry to succeed despite all his frustrations. The episodic structure of the book is most effective in making it hang together as a narrative. Even the straight bits of historic information about what was really going on at that time are extremely enlightening and valuable. Fry's indomitable spirit through it all, in the face of one disappointment after another is inspiring. Even though his own life finally ended sadly, he still had, as we now have, thanks to him, the lasting impact of the happy endings of the lives he saved.

For someone like myself, who enjoys a really exciting story, preferably about a real person,one need go no further than to read "A Hero of Our Own" by Sheila Isenberg. Varian Frye, a not-so-ordinary American, feels impelled to leave his comfortable life as a writer and editor and go to France as a member of the Emergency Rescue Committe (ERC) and risk his life to save as many refugees (mostly Jews) as he can from the Nazis. Frye is the only American to be honored at Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust Memorial) because of his work in saving thousands of Jews. If I didn't know it was a true story, I'd think it was fiction because his adventures read like a fast-paced thriller, a veritable realization of the classic "film noir" of the forties. In fact, I feelthe book cries out to be made into a movie which I would be happy to see. Of course some of the book's revealed facts about our own State Department trying to keep refugee Jews from entering the United States when they knew it mean certain death was quite shocking and disturbing. However, all in all, I'd recommend the book to anyone who enjoys reading a fast-paced book about real heros and history.

Varian Fry was an American hero, risking his life to save others, unrecognized during his lifetime, but, fortunately, with Isenberg's new biography, now about to become a well-known figure. Called the artists' Schindler, Fry saved about 1,500 artists, writers, teachers, labor leaders, activists, and others from Hitler -- Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, and Hannah Arendt among the group. A Hero of Our Own tells Fry's story in a lively, compelling style. One can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens in Nazi-ridden, Vichy-controlled Marseille 1940. Who will be saved? Who will be turned over to the Gestapo? Why did Fry risk his life? This book answers all these questions in a fascinating story that is well worth reading -- as Fry is well worth remembering and honoring.

Great Poet Leaves A Legacy

Agha Shahid Ali's place as one of the most significant poets of the late twentieth century is assured by the body of work he has left us. This book is an excellent example of the variegated shades of nuance Shahid was capable of producing. We can be grateful for the work he left us: it provides some solace for those of us who were lucky enough to know him.

Uris' best book. A taut novel of espionage and courage.

This is far and away my favorite Leon Uris novel. Unlike many of Uris' other works, this book is crisply written, the story moves at a fast pace, the ending is climactic, and the characters are vivid. The protagonist, Andre Devereaux, is unforgettable.
This is a novel essentially of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It also deals with postwar French foreign policy under De Gaulle (thinly disguised as "Le Croix" in the novel). The novel is told from the perspective of Devereaux, a French intelligence officer. Devereaux must deal with his knowledge of the Soviet activities in Cuba as well as Soviet penetration of the French government.
This is a fine novel. Unlike many of Uris' other novels, it does not bog down, and the characters behave like real people. There are no idealized characters--each person is shown complete with flaws and foibles. Recommended.

WELL DONE STORY..OF INTRIGUE.

What a wonderful novel this is. Again Leon Uris is able to make a good story great...this time we are brought into the world of espionage between, the Soviets, Americans and France. In a nut shell there is a great conspiracy brewing i.e. the Cuban Missile Crisis...but Uris goes a step further by saying that maybe the entire Crises was a hoax...dreamed up to get France to leave NATO and weaken the alliance....or is it? I must admit he is really able to keep the story moving along and does a great job creating mystery and intrigue. As you read you are never sure who is telling the truth and who is not...It really makes you bite your nails and question what you think is going on....that is a good story to me.

I feel they should re-release this novel because it is very indicative of our times now. A good read.

Another great book by Leon

Enjoyed reading this book about the Cuban crisis in the early sixties. A fictional account of this time understood but it was a trying time and of interest. I like the way Leon has his characters portray events that could have happened or did happen depending on our knowledge of history. Will go on to read all his other novels, hope to accomplish that in my life time.

Good, but there is a better one.

Pretty good book, but there is a better one.

This book essentially gives you a definition of each process, but does not go into any real depth on how to execute the process. It leaves you with an impression of "ok, so now what?"

If you want a good visual dictionary of processes and are willing to do more research to learn how to 'do it' then this is a good product.

Photos are excellent and overall production of the book is quite good.

I would recommend "Manufacturing Processes for Design Professionals" as a better choice. While it too is a good 'visual dictionary' it has more meat to it and more processes covered.

Very very good. 50 is a lot of products, and they are all explained very well with good text and images. Not superficial and it focus on something new in design books: the ways that designers find to achieve a certain form.

This book shows what a designer really want to see, that is not the concept isolated or the process within the corporate team, but the cases where the designer used the process to inovate creating good product design.

Wide ranging and inspirational

This is a great book. I haven't read it all yet but am impressed at the wide range of inspirational design case studies. Jennifer Hudson has chosen interesting designs that vary from craft to true mass production and all of them seem to have a good reason for being in the book.

Great explanation of what the lifestyle should be like

Ok, I admit at first I found the whole step brother premise a little weird. But this is a great book. The characters are well developed and the plot moves nicely. And let's face it, who wouldn't want hot twins catering to her? On the darker side, this book does shed light on a trouble spot in the BDSM community, abusive relationships. It's rather easy to confuse abuse with BDSM for newbies but this book explains the differences nicely.
