About the Author
Dr. Edward A. Le was born and raised in Lam Dong, Vietnam. He left Vietnam and came to the U.S.A. as a refugee at the age of eighteen. He enrolled first at the University of Washington and then at other universities in the US and completed his doctoral degrees. He has taught, researched, and worked both in industry and universities. He has traveled and worked in different countries and experienced different cultures. Up until now he has experienced different suffering and tragedy. Now, he is at a different path and stage in his life in terms of family, economically and health but managed to make it through these trials.

One of the Best Book I have read

If you are a new immigrant in a new country. If you think your life was filled by all of the challenges and difficulties. If sometime in your daily life, you feel tired and want to give up. Let's get the Dr. Edward Le's "The Road to Success: Gaining happiness in the new country" book, I'm really sure that you will find much of happiness in your life. This is one of my favorite books ! Read this book, I saw myself in it, I saw all of the challenges I have faced and overcame ! I know that in the future, I will have to face with many difficulties and challenge, but Dr. Edward's book will help me to find the happiness in my life ! The all things I can tell you now that you will not disappoint to buy and read this book ! Let this book be your friend on your road to success. !!! By the way, Thank you Dr. Edward Le for sharing all of your memories and experiences ! They are really helpful and I appreciate this ! In Edward Le’s book “The Road to Success: Gaining Happiness in a New Country” (2015), he provides a detailed history of his life. He notes that at age 18 he was a refugee from Vietnam, overcoming a background of adversity, trials and tribulations to experiences with high levels of family, health, education and finances. He recalls “Up until now he has experienced different suffering and tragedy." A very interesting depiction of an authors struggle through life. A rare piece about the struggle of an Asian immigrant in strange land, as a matter of fact this book is reminscent to Makibaka 2 by Roy Morales and I suggest reading both materials.

About the Author

Harold W. (Bill) Kohl, III, PhD, is a professor of epidemiology and kinesiology at the University of Texas School of Public Health Austin Regional Campus and the University of Texas at Austin. Before this appointment, he served as lead epidemiologist and team leader in the Physical Activity and Health Branch of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

He has worked since 1984 in the area of physical activity and health, including conducting research, developing and evaluating intervention programs for adults and children, and developing and advising on policy issues. He earned his doctorate in epidemiology and community health studies at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center School of Public Health and a master’s of science degree in public health at the University of South Carolina. Kohl’s other areas of specialization are biostatistics and health promotion.

His research interests include current focuses on physical activity, exercise, fitness and health, and sports medicine surveillance systems for musculoskeletal injuries. In his recent efforts, he has concentrated on national and international physical activity surveillance and epidemiology issues as well as program development and evaluation studies for the promotion of school-based physical activity for children and adolescents.

Kohl has served as an elected trustee and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is a fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology. He is the founding president of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health. He has served in an editorial capacity for several scientific journals and is currently coeditor of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. He has published more than 150 articles, chapters, and monographs in the scientific literature.

Tinker D. Murray, PhD, is a professor of health and human performance at Texas State University in San Marcos. He earned his PhD in physical education from Texas A&M University in 1984. His research interests include school-based and clinical-based youth physical activity interventions for the prevention of obesity and diabetes, continuing education opportunities for coaching education, and personal fitness and training applications related to exercise physiology.

From 1982 to 1984, Murray served as director of cardiac rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was twice recognized for his exceptional performance. Since 1984, he has been at Southwest Texas and Texas State University, where he served as the director of employee wellness from 1984 to 1988 and director of the exercise performance laboratory from 1984 to 2000. He was a volunteer assistant cross country and track coach at Southwest Texas from 1985 to 1988 and helped win three Gulf Star Conference titles.

From 1985 to 1988, he was a subcommittee member for the Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness that developed the Fit Youth Today Program. He served as lecturer and examiner for the USA Track and Field Level II Coaching Certification Program from 1988 to 2008 and as the vice chair of the Governor's Commission for Physical Fitness in Texas from 1993 to 1994. He has worked with the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) since 2003 as a facilitator with the Professional Development Cooperative, which promotes continuing education opportunities.

Murray is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and certified as an ACSM program director. He was a two-time president of the Texas regional chapter of ACSM (1987 and 1994). He served on the national ACSM Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2001. In the fall of 2003, he was a guest researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. He has been a member of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH) since 2009 and has attended all three biannual meetings of the International Congress on Physical Activity and Public Health.

Book Review of TotIs by J Joseph Kazden – Kirkus Reviews

Kazden offers a mind-expanding debut novel about a symposium examining the core concepts of the universe.
Imagine if great minds from across the ages could congregate in one room to discuss their understanding of time and reality. In this ambitious work, Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, among others, come together to do just this. To befit the nature of the symposium as a great Hellenic institution, the author gives each of the characters Greek names. Einstein is called “Miapetra,” meaning “one stone”; Hawking is referred to as “Geraki” or “hawk,” whereas Isaac Newton is “Neatono” or “new ton.” The men meet at Neatono’s house, where they begin a discussion about relativity theory, and specifically how the past, present, and future are relative. The author’s use of Socratic questioning proves to be a gentle introduction to complex ideas, particularly for the uninitiated. Yet, readers may still benefit from prior knowledge of quantum mechanics to truly grasp this discussion. The explorations of how perceptions of reality vary between individuals are particularly fascinating: “So two individuals of the same species with sensory equipment of unequal quality will experience differently the same reality, to all intents and purposes, would you agree?” The book introduces two new definitions: antIs, “the human observer’s experience of reality and the universe,” and totIs, “which defines a total reality of the universe unavailable to human observer’s created antIs reality.” The arguments are dazzlingly convincing, although there’s a certain arrogance in reanimating the world’s greatest thinkers simply to have them concur with one’s main thesis. However, the book is not without a wry humor—Max Planck talks of switching to a gluten-free diet and Newton speaks of getting his cataracts removed. Purists may contest the probability of each word the author drops into the mouths of these great men, but this controversy is part and parcel of this brilliantly daring piece of work.

About the Author

J. Joseph Kazden was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he studied mathematics, chemistry, and psychology in college during the early 1970s. Deeply influenced by the ideas of such thinkers as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, he began a lifelong pursuit of the nature of perception and reality. This led to the study of Taoist, Buddhist, and Hindu thought, along with shamanic and First Peoples rituals and practices, in addition to continued study in physics and cosmology, focusing on the counterintuitive nature of the reality described by relativity, quantum mechanics, and particle physics.

In the early eighties, he began a career in art, focusing on images generated by the psyche, which Jung called archetypes of the collective unconscious. Believing that the world we experience is not ultimate reality, he came to an epiphany in 2012. This book is the culmination of this journey and the expression of that epiphany.

Totis challenges our view of “reality” in an entertaining and easy to follow story. Kazden crafts a hypothetical conversation between some of the greatest thinkers known to mankind blending their theories and discoveries to justify the possibility that we are all living a persistent illusion. This is a powerful book that has the potential to change the way the reader views the world.

An Easy Introduction a Philosophy

Although I do not think of myself as a philosophy student I found this book VERY easy to follow as J Joseph builds his case, step by step. The author has cleverly given the 'argument' roles to known philosophers to keep it interesting. The writing itself is succinct and carefully written to encourage thinking along these lines. I recommend it.

A "CLASSIC" TOPICAL SCRIPTURE REFERENCE WORK FOR LDS MISSIONARIES

The author wrote in the Foreword to this 1956 book, "My reason for compiling this book has been to try and make it possible for anyone to quickly and easily find any important passage of scripture under any important subject, and yet have the book small enough to be easy for the missionary to carry with him at all times."

The publisher's Introduction to the book notes, "For three years (Keith Marston) worked night and day with very little sleep to earn a living for his family, support his son on a Foreign Mission, and search scriptures and reference material for 'The Missionaries Pal" ... Early morning on July 11, 1956, while en route to a crop dusting assignment... he slumped over the controls of the plane and plunged to Earth. Two days previously he had thumbed happily through 'The Missionaries Pal' and declared to his wife and visiting friends, 'I couldn't add another thing to it. It is finished!'"

Bias Shows Through

While this book is very good on providing scripture quotations, the commentary is dated and extremely biased. If this book were to be shared with people of non-Mormon faiths, they would become very defensive and rightly so. The author's invective toward the Catholic faith is appaling. Many Mission Presidents do not recommend this book. It could be dangerous in the hands of the untrained.

Herman Hesse is like coming home. I was fascinated to learn this predates Siddhartha and that it is not better known as it seems to surpass even the subtle introspective epiphanies in that novel.

Along with Siddhartha, Demian is another Hesse classic

Great story of coming of age and feeling a sense of oneness to the connected natural and spiritual world. There were many great characters and interesting philosophical observations along the way. The introduction by James Franco seemed a bit disconnected to the book itself and self-serving, but the other introduction (by which scholar I have forgotten) was wonderfully researched and well written.

A usefull introduction to Lakhovsky work

This review needs three opinions.

1.- About edition work. I hoped more from this book, poor edition work, a lot of photocopies and bad photocopies,very very little and blurred text and photos. note: 2 from 1 to 5.

2.-Technical information: Indubitably here you can find info difficult to find at Internet. I believe which if you have a technical engineering degree and read books from Lakhovsky, Tesla, D'Arsonval and others you can build a strong compilation (far better than this book) of oscillating healling waves that will drive you to a full understanding of biologhy and MWO, electronic's and MWO and at last health. Any way it's a good starting place. Note: 4 from 1 to 5.

Ladies, read this one on a train, at a park, anywhere in public.

I've read this essay and others by Solnit all prior to their inclusion in this slim little tone with the exactly right-sized lettering on its cover. I am hugely adoring of her writing, so this review is less about the essays themselves (all fantastic) than the fact that it is a discrete volume you can, and should, be toting around in public.

Ladies, read it on the subway.

Two nights ago I was coming home from a lovely summer's walk to a favorite bookstore, where I snapped up the book. I took it out of my bag at 10:30 p.m. on a sublime Saturday night in New York, on the G train.

I was standing, but a Latina woman with her daughter on her lap craned her neck to try see the title of the book. Next to her, two other women who seemed to be out on the town for the night, were whispering to each other, "what does it say?"

The Latina woman cocked her head further and spoke up, "Men Explain Things..."

I spun on my heel and showed off the cover.

"'Men Explain Things to Me.' It's great."

"What is it about?" asked one of the women out on the town. I could tell by the tilt of her eyebrow that she thought its premise was dubious. She did not want Things Explained to her.

I scooched over to where they were sitting, and gave them a short precis of the essay's key narrative moment, closing with: "and you ladies know what she's talking about right? Has that ever happened to you?"

"Mmm-HMM." "You know it has." And a few little cheers and murmurs erupted from the half-dozen women in the train car. We all smiled. I went back to the book, and the women who were out on the town started talking about how Frankie was doing the exact same thing last week, and had no idea what he was talking about.

Some Thoughts On/For Conservative Readers

I bought this book for my brother-in-law shortly after my sister gave birth to a daughter. I thought it would be a fun “Hey, you have a daughter, this might be a good thing to start thinking about”-type gift. And so he didn’t feel totally alone while reading it, I bought myself a copy as well.

Solnit is clearly a powerful mind and talented writer. Her prose is strong and forceful, and she writes with stirring— at times contagious—- conviction. The book’s most powerful essays (“Men Explain Things To Me” and “#YesAllWomen”) are intelligent, clear-sighted looks at a massive, difficult, dangerous topic. It’s saddens me to applaud Solnit for her courage in writing this, if only because that acknowledges the typical backlash against women who speak out against misogyny, but she IS courageous and that alone warrants commendation.

The book starts out with a funny, almost playful anecdote about being mansplained to by a pompous idiot at a party in Aspen, but then quickly moves into darker waters. Solnit goes on to use politics, art, history and new media as springboards for discussing the interconnectedness of cultural misogyny and how mansplaining and rape can be viewed as existing on a continuum. Towards the end of the book she summarizes this nicely: “It’s a slippery slope. That’s why we need to address the slope, rather than compartmentalizing the varieties of misogyny and dealing with them separately.” (p. 134) It’s a new way of looking at an ancient problem, articulated in a way that I don’t think I’ve heard before, and Solnit rounds out her case by anticipating counter arguments (i.e. men being falsely imprisoned for rape) and responding to them to the degree that they deserve.

So here’s the part where I complain: While her arguments are culturally important and her writing is strong, Solnit’s rhetoric seems, at times, deliberately hyperbolic and meant to divide readers. On pg. 57 she describes the case of Ariel Castro, a man accused of imprisoning, torturing and sexually abusing three women as being “a vicious version of the traditional [marriage] arrangement.” Later on in the book (p. 153) she takes a similar swipe at capitalism: “There’s more that we need to be liberated from… a system that serves environmental destruction and limitless consumption…” And beyond that there’s a general celebration of revolution, (non-violent) anarchy, as well as Solnit’s insistence that this is, indeed, “a war.” In other words, if you’re traditional / conservative / old-fashioned, then chances are you’re probably going to feel pretty alienated while reading this, if not all out attacked. I don’t consider myself conservative, but there were still times when I felt myself getting defensive. With that said, I was less annoyed with this on ideological terms than I was by what felt like a tactical mis-step. Simply put: This is a wise book. This is an important book. A lot of people should be reading it and absorbing it's message. And I could suddenly feel thousands of readers— good people who’s minds are ready to be expanded— fleeing from it’s very positive message, because they were being lumped in with rapists and murderers. I was frustrated because I felt like the book was preaching to the choir and, in-so-doing, entrenching conservatives deeper into their current belief systems.

One could argue that this book isn't intended to convert and so it's unfair to judge it by those standards; that it’s a celebration and reminder of what’s already been accomplished in the fight for gender equality, and that now it’s up to someone else to write the gentler, more palatable book that eases The Other Side into progressive thinking. And you know what— that may very well be the case. In the meantime, I encourage conservative thinkers who are interested in reading this to do so with an open mind instead of just looking for things to disagree with. Because the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of what’s discussed in this book really has nothing to do with superficial left / right politics and everything to do with how we want our nieces/daughters to be treated as they grow up in the world. And that feels like something we can all agree on.

This book was really good. It opened my eyes to a lot of information of which I was sadly unaware. But a fair warning: It is very upsetting. I got angry and depressed after I read this and realized how pervasive is the subjugation of women in our society. It gave me the courage to stand up and not let people silence me.
