A gentle and respectful autobiography by a distinguished British actor

Like so many people, I have enjoyed on many levels the long-running television series in which Poirot provides the most in-depth and thoughtful interpretation of Agatha Christie's detective, so I was fascinated to read his personal take on the experience. Having recently watched Suchet in a couple of documentaries, I have been won over by the man's gentle nature and self-effacing charm, so I immensely enjoyed this autobiography which will also serve as a useful historical record of the making of the programmes.

The book reveals him to be very like Poirot in many ways, including his modest and polite manner allied with extreme competence. I must admit I didn't realise how many other highly-acclaimed parts he had played in the theatre, and I admire him even more now for having juggled such a demanding and long-running series with so many other roles.

I'm now very tempted to invest in a complete set of the Poirot DVDs and watch them in the order that they were made, to appreciate the commentary that this book provides...

Great story behind the making of the PBS series and the Poirot character

David Suchet's story reads like a biography of a close friend. He describes how he got the role of Poirot and how he developed the character from Agatha Christie's books over the 25 years and 13 seasons the PBS mystery show aired. Especially poignant is the story of filming Curtain, which ends with Poirot's death, as well as the the final episode of Dead Man's Folly filmed on location at Greenwood, Agatha Christie's summer home in Devon, England. Dame Agatha and David Suchet made the character of Hercule Poirot come to life. Fans will truly enjoy this final story of the merging of a great story teller, fantastic actor, and memorable character.

A "Must Have" for Poirot fans

This is a fantastic book and like the Poirot series is enjoyable from beginning to end. I intend to refer to it often as I continue to view my treasured DVDs. I have all of the David Suchet's Poirot series, except #13 that I have ordered and am waiting for it to be released.
I had read some if Agatha Christie's books and saw one or two of the Poirot movies but did not become such an avid fan until Mr. Suchet added such charm to Poirot's character. Now I shall never say "Good Bye" to my dear Belgian friend. When I leave for work with a slightly mismatched pair of gloves, I hear Poirot's voice "One must never let one's self go Hastings" and I go back inside the house for the matching glove. Hopefully, Mr. Suchet has added a little of Poirot in most of us.
My first time eating a mango was after Poirot's demonstration and now I have the directions and delightful story on page 117.
ITV people complain of expense to make the Poirot series - Please keep in mind the money brought it. I have purchased so many things connected with Poirot since the series began. The Christopher Gunning Cds, books, tote bags, Poirot and Agatha Christie charm bracelets, "Death on the Orient Express" earrings to name a few. I dislike reality TV and wouldn't own a TV if it wasn't for quality programs such as these. I hope the brilliant screenwriters, producers and directors mentioned in this book will bring Poirot back to life and continue with Miss Marple and other Agatha Christie stories.

Stephen Greenblatt (Ph.D. Yale) is Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. Also General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, he is the author of eleven books, including The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (winner of the 2011 National Book Award and the 2012 Pulitzer Prize); Shakespeare's Freedom; Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare; Hamlet in Purgatory; Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New World; Learning to Curse: Essays in Early Modern Culture; and Renaissance Self-Fashioning: From More to Shakespeare. He has edited seven collections of criticism, including Cultural Mobility: A Manifesto, and is a founding coeditor of the journal Representations. His honors include the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize, for both Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England and The Swerve, the Sapegno Prize, the Distinguished Humanist Award from the Mellon Foundation, the Wilbur Cross Medal from the Yale University Graduate School, the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre, the Erasmus Institute Prize, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley. Jack Stillinger (Ph.D. Harvard) is Center for Advanced Study Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Illinois. He is the author of The Hoodwinking of Madeline and Other Essays on Keats’s Poems, The Texts of Keats’s Poems, the standard edition of The Poems of John Keats; Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius; Coleridge and Textual Instability; and Reading "The Eve of St. Agnes." He is the recipient of Guggenheim and Woodrow Wilson fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

M. H. Abrams (1912―2015) was Class of 1916 Professor of English, Emeritus at Cornell University. He received the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Prize for The Mirror and the Lamp and the MLA's James Russell Lowell Prize for Natural Supernaturalism. He is also the author of The Milk of Paradise, A Glossary of Literary Terms, The Correspondent Breeze, and Doing Things with Texts. He is the recipient of Guggenheim, Ford Foundation, and Rockefeller Postwar fellowships, the Award in Humanistic Studies from the Academy of Arts and Sciences (1984), the Distinguished Scholar Award by the Keats-Shelley Society (1987), and the Award for Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1990). In 1999 The Mirror and the Lamp was ranked twenty-fifth among the Modern Library's "100 best nonfiction books written in English during the twentieth century."

Excellent Overview of the American Revolution

“Patriots” by A.J. Langguth is a masterful account of the road to American independence and the Revolutionary War. Guiding the readers from the 1760s until the end of the war in 1783, Langguth offers memorable sketches of the leading figures and provides a gripping narrative of the major events. Langguth is the rare historian who is excellent when covering politics and military events. While Langguth does a fine job of covering events in Europe as well as America, the book is far more focused on New England than the rest of the colonies. That’s excellent in some parts such as the coming of the Revolution (though Langguth could have done more on the independence movement in other areas). But that’s a problem in other parts, namely the military conflict in the later half of the war as Langguth simply doesn’t seem concerned with much of the conflict in the South. No matter. For an excellent overview of the road to independence and the Revolutionary War, readers would do well to look at this wonderful book. Highly recommended.

Fifth and last in Atlas's "Archive Documents of the Avant-garde," this is the first about a composer, though it emphasizes Satie's prose writings and pen-and-ink drawings. Musical examples are included only to illustrate Satie's distinctive musical autograph or the placement of whimsical performance directions, such as his command to a pianist to "put yourself in the shade." Satie so enjoyed playing with words and being "original" that translations of his writings are a bit dangerous, but for any English-only reader interested in Satie's iconoclastic, inventive spirit, this well-organized collection of much nonsense and some sincerity?including articles about Stravinsky and Debussy?will be welcome. Excellent, unobtrusive notes give sources and dates and explain certain elements of content. Recommended for larger music collections that already have studies of Satie's music and all collections concerned with the early 20th-century avant garde.?Bonnie Jo Dopp, Long Branch Community Lib., Silver Spring, Md.

Another side of Satie

Norman Lebrecht observes that Virgil Thomson considered Satie the most original mind in modern music, and laments that he applied his gifts so inconsistently. This collection may engender the opposite conclusion, that Satie could have been a great humorist, had he not devoted so much time to musical composition. Included here are the instructions to performers that Satie forbade sharing with the audience, although, unfortunately, the individual piece to which each one applies is not specified. Several essays, notably "The Musician's Day," straddle the line between satire and surrealism. Overall, the collection adds a dimension to Satie beyond his music. Somewhat disturbing are the samples of "advertisements" that reveal an obsession with adolescent interests - castles, sorcerers, and aircraft.

I found Satie's words and satirical sense of humour so delightful that it was impossible for me to put the book away when my train ride came to an end, so my 20-minute walk home became a half hour walk-read with occcasional bursts of laughter. (I guess I looked a little strange, but one often feels compelled to do strange things when immersed in the eccentric world of Satie, who was a true maverick.) Since that time, I have spent many an hour enthralled by this book. (Luckily, I have since invested in my own copy)

Now, I may be a little obsessive, but I think many others will also enjoy A Mammal's Notebook.

About the contents:

Satie is an enigmatic character. He very rarely discussed his own composition processes, so if you are looking for that, you will not find it here.

What you will find includes:
-A mini biography and timeline
-Translations of the witty and mysterious texts that accompany many of his pieces.
-A list of Satie's eccentric performance markings translated to English (e.g. Almost invisible..., Avoid any sacrilegious excitement... Grandly forgetting the present,... etc)
-Articles which he wrote for publication (on various topics: his contemporaries, the art of reading aloud, books, etc.)
-Transcriptions of speeches
-Other writings and musings which weren't intended for publication
-Sketches (of unusual architectural constructions, boats, etc.)

The only thing missing here is an analysis of the material included, but that point is forgivable as there analyses out there. (I would encourage other readers not to skip the end notes as these do give context to some of the items included.)
