Fascinating!

This is a fascinating study on the literary structure of Freud's writing. HOW he presents his arguments rather than WHAT they were. How did he appeal to his audience? Why did he state his propositions with such certainty? What were the resources of his figurative language? Recall that Freud won the Goethe Prize for literature, not for his theories of psychoanalysis. Harold Bloom considers Freud to be one of the great poets of our age on the strength of his literary merit. This book is a must read for all students of Freud, and a lot of fun as well. Patrick J. Mahony is a practicing psychoanalyst as well as a professor of English literature at the University of Montreal.

A comprehensive examination at cross-cultural violences.

This interdisciplinary reader covers definitions of violence and looks at violence in relation to law, gender, race, nationalism and class. Finally, it examines nonviolence alternatives as put forward by leaders such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
I originally picked this book up as a supplementary reader for a course on Gandhi. I wanted to have more cohesive understanding at the many ways violence affects our social landscape. It, and others, has found itself in a well-respected place in my personal library.
While its language is more academic than layman, I think it is very accessible for those who have an interest in the social dynamics of violence. Its wide variety of topics are sure to interest all readers.
We need to understand the root causes of violence if we ever hope to stop it. This book is an excellent beginning to understanding our global culture.

This marvellously edited book by Dr. steger is a wonderful reader on understanding violence and nonviolence. If you want to understand how our history has been shaped by violence and non-violence, this is a must read. All the great writings in the book are written by great theorists like Arendt and Martin Luther King,jr.,etc., which are really convenient for readers like me who are interested in writing papers on this subject.

About the Author
Joan R. Kaplowitz retired from her librarian position at UCLA in 2007. Dr. Kaplowitz was also a member of the faculty development team for the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Institute for Information Literacy’s Immersion Program, and taught in six of the programs between 1999 and 2004. About the Author

Chan Master Sheng Yen (1930–2009) was a widely respected Taiwanese Chan (Chinese Zen) master who taught extensively in the West during the last thirty-one y ears of his life, with twenty-one centers throughout North America, as well as dozens of others throughout the world. He has co-led retreats with the Dalai Lama, and he is the author of numerous books in Chinese and English, including Song of Mind, The Method of No-Method, and his autobiography, Footprints in the Snow.

A Retreat in a Book

Someone a few weeks back lamented their inability to go on a retreat. This book is the perfect solution to that situation, as it's essentially a retreat in book form. I introduced Master Sheng Yen a while back when I reviewed his book "Footprints in the Snow." I was impressed with that biography, and wanted to learn more about his actual teachings, so when he released this latest book, I jumped on the opportunity to read it. This book is basically a cleaned-up transcript of one of the week-long retreats that he offers.

There are three main sections to the book, "The Practice of Silent Illumination", "Master Hongzhi's Discourse: First Commentary", and "Master Hongzhi's Discourse: Second Commentary." Master Hongzhi lived from 1091-1157 and was the first to write about the practice of Silent Illumination. Sheng Yen has deeply researched into this Master and teaches his ancient method today.

The first section of the book is broken up into seven days' teachings on how to practice Silent Illumination. Silent Illumination, to put it simply (probably too simply), seems to be a combination of "Empty Mind" meditation combined with the idea of being one with the environment. Sheng Yen gives several short talks each day, and each has a small section with that day's teachings. If you wanted to know what goes on in a retreat, this book is a clear way to see without actually attending one.

The second and third sections are also broken up into seven days' teachings, but are more theoretical, explaining the original writings of Hongzhi in a modern way.

Since this is basically a transcription of a real week long seminar, there is some repetition, as the teacher reiterates some of what has gone before, but it's not overly repetitious. Actually, some of the expansions in the later days really clarify what silent Illumination is all about.

Although practice and success at Silent Illumination is not an easy thing, the book is not complicated at all. There is some Buddhist jargon in the book, but whenever a new term is introduced, the word is marked with an *asterisk to show that it is explained in the glossary. He explains the practice of meditation, and explains that there are stages in Silent Illumination, but that not all of them are necessary; you might choose to focus on one stage forever. The book is reasonably short, but it did take me a while to get through it, as there is a lot here to think about.

Bottom Line: If you want to learn how a real Master teaches real meditation and theory in a real retreat setting, this is it. The language is easy and conversational, the ideas are not complex (quite the opposite in fact), yet there is enough depth here that you could spend the rest of your life mastering it.

Very straightfoward and useful book

Few books go into as much detail on the method of Mo Chao as this book by master Sheng Yen. In Zen the same method is known by the japanese name, "Shikantaza". Here Chan master Sheng Yen elucidates the method, its importance and its uses within the context of his Chan tradition. Whether your strictly Zen or familiar with Chan buddhism, if you like the silent illumination style of practice, if you like methods like Dzogchen for example, then you will love this book and find very practical examples of how practice and concentration works. Master Sheng Yen is the only Chan master I have ever heard of that actually went on a speaking tour with the Dali Lama. He is a highly respected teacher becasue fo his gnosis and ability to illucidate the fine aspects of sitting practice.
One final suggestion, this practice is really for people that have already generated a degree of concentration or samatha. Its really a method specific book. It is all about the specific method of entering into the stillness and silence of the mind through using the attention as the object of meditation itself. While th emethod is easily explained by Master Sheng Yen it requires some previous experience in meditation in my opinion. If you consider yourself a serious practicioner then this is great book for you.

The Method of No-Method

When I picked up this book I had no clue of what Chan is or had never heard of it before but when I read it through just first three days of this book, I realized and was amazed to see how realistically the master author has fulfilled the need and dream of so many who do not have access to legitimate live teachers who will guide them on their way telling and interpreting what it means when something happens or something does not happen. Shifu Sheng Yen has touched the substance without wasting any time of the audience in this book. The book itself is a 7 days long retreat, however, you can use it for your life. He not only himself directly goes and reaches the core but also takes you with him. The translator Guogu has done an excellent job in capturing the essence of the Chan teaching. You need not be a believer or of certain religion if you want to practice it. Just start on the practice and you will discover what the book is all about.

This is a must book if you are reading or are planning to read Cultivating the Empty Field: The Silent Illumination of Zen Master Hongzhi.

The Tragedy of Birlstone...

"The Valley of Fear" is one of four Sherlock Holmes novels ably adapted to graphic novel format by Ian Edginton and I.N.J. Culbard. Conan Doyle's short novel introduces Holmes' greatest nemisis, the brillant crime boss Professor Moriarty, while challengng the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and faithful sidekick Doctor Watson to solve a mysterious death at the country manor house of Birlstone.

As the story opens, Scotland Yard Inspector McDonald consults Holmes on a horrible murder. John Douglas of Birlstone Manor has been horribly murdered by the blast of a sawn-off shotgun at close range. There is no apparent motive and it is unclear who might be responsible. Holmes and Watson travel to Birlstone to interview the witnesses and examine the crime scene. Holmes quickly detects a deception; his solution will astonish the local police, Scotland Yard, and the reader.

Edginton has adapted all the essentials of the original novel into a 124-page graphic format, while Culbard's simple but evocative artwork brings Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to life. As with two other of the novels, the story is presented in two parts, with Holmes and Watson solving a crime in the present, followed by an explanatory (and exciting) backstory to fill in the gaps. The backstory here concerns labor violence in a Pennsylvania coalfield, a gripping story in its own right. "The Valley of Fear" has been neglected in adaptions of Conan Doyle's stories to other mediums; Edginton and Culbard are to be congratulated for their nice job here. Highly recommended to Sherlock Holmes fans and to their children who need an introduction to the world famous detective.

Edginton and Culbert continue their faithful visual translations of The Great Detective's novel-length adventures, their pictures adding weight to (and substituting for when necessary, as should happen in a good visual retelling of a prose piece) Conan Doyle's verbal imagery.
One of Sherlock Holmes' lesser-known (at least among the general readership who do not count themselves Baker Street Irregulars, the Trekkies of Holmesiana) adventures gets a compelling retelling in the hands of these two British artists.
Though there's still a bit more of the tell than show, one can excuse that by the need to appeal to the legions of Sherlock Holmes fans, for whom there is no substitute for the Literary Agent's words.
Though the characters are drawn with simple lines to the point of abstractions, they are nonetheless expressive, and crucial elements of the story are told in the subtle expressions of a character in the background. Even the "visual double act" (the artists' words) of the guest detectives, "Mister Mac" and Mr. White Mason, show subtleties and layers of expression
Not to say the major characters get short shrift artistically. Their faces are drawn rich in expression and each is given a distince personality. Holmes is arrogantly masterful, Watson is affably long-suffering (and I thank Messrs. Edginton and Culbert for depicting Watson as vigorous and intelligent in the mold of Burke or Hardwicke or even Jude Law, not the stuffy buffoon that Nigel Bruce still lodges in many minds after all these years).
Though it's not mentioned in the notes, I can't help but think the look of the central figure, the American Douglas, was based on how a certain iconically American actor looked at about the time he shifted from playing rough, tough cowboys to playing successful ranchers who used to be rough, tough cowboys. Good choice, really.
Now what I really would like to see is this pair tackle the short stories. Any of them, really; there are wonderful visuals to be had in
"The Dancing Men" or "Black Peter" or "Norwood Builder," just to name a few off the top of my head -- and wouldn't you like to see E. and C. tackle the "Final Problem-Empty House" pair of stories? I would. More please, sirs.

Uniquely Illustrated and Retold

I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I have read almost every single mystery involving Holmes many times. I knew the story going into the book, but I still loved this graphic novel. I thought Edginton and Culbard did a wonderful job in recreating this story and I have read it a few times since receiving it. Well done, sirs.
