He has contributed to numerous publications on Italian art, particularly on architecture and architectural theory of the 15th to 18th centuries. Bernd Evers completed his doctorate in art history before embarking on a career as a librarian; since 1985 he has been director of the Kunstbibliothek der Staatlichen Museen in Berlin. He has published numerous articles on book and library studies.

Architecture theory and history

I didn't find this book until the end of the semester, but it covers what we have been discussing in both architectural theory and history. I would recomend this for any architecture students who want a quick overview of prominent figures of architectural thought with illustrations that help to clearly convey their ideas. This book has many of the same pictures/drawings as are featured in much more expensive history books (like Spiro Kostof's "Settings and Rituals"). This book is only an overview, but will be a quite helpful addition to any student's library.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Piece of Americana

This is a wonderful little time capsule. Originally published in 1965, the story of Mordecai Jones, also known as "the flim-flam man," and Curley Treadway is an episodic tale filled with the local color of eastern North Carolina 40 years ago. Back then, the eastern part of the state was a rural poor man's land without speedy highways, dependent upon tobacco for its economy. This episodic tale recounts the adventures of young Curley who went AWOL from the military and meets up with Mr. Jones as he is thrown from a train. Being the obliging sort, Curley pulls Jones' head out of a puddle, saving his life, and thus sets up the friendship that creates havoc throughout the eastern part of the state. The cons they pull off are all great fun from selling punchboards, gambling, stealing chickens, playing guitar, and even substituting for the revival minister when it's time to pass the hat. They steal a truck full of liquor from moonshiner Dooley, and proceed to drive that truck all over the East dispensing good spirits wherever they go. Near the end, Curley crashes the truck right into a church, appropriately enough, setting up the final climax of the book. Like all good partnerships, this one is tested by the love of a pretty girl, Miss Bonnie Lee, who takes Curley's heart faster than you can say "jackrabbit." Some of the language remembers the old South as blacks are referred to as "coloreds." Given the time frame, it seems to fit, despite how it might currently be received. Owen certainly knows his local references and gives the flavor of this area. It's good fun, a pretty quick read. Seek & enjoy!

great book

this was a great book, very entertaining. Too bad it was so short, because I would have enjoyed reading more about the adventures of Mordecai Jones. This book was made into a movie starring George C. Scott, who I love, but let me warn you. The story in the movie is totally different than the book. Abnd the book is the better story of the two.

One of my top five favorite books... a tale of hucksters and roving musicians in the early-ish 1900's. Just wish it was available in ebook form as I'm a roving musician myself, and for the sake of space, have resorted to a kindle.

Incredible detail of every facet of fabricating a watch

This book is amazing. I have just received the latest edition, and cannot believe the wealth of detail and knowledge presented by George Daniels. This book is a masterwork, by a master of his art.

It's not just for watchmakers; anyone interested in any kind of precision fabrication, metalworking, metal finishing, or tool making will find much of value in this book. Mr. Daniel's writing style is straight forward and to the point, no wasted words. You will feel as if he is watching over your shoulder, patiently instructing you in exactly what to do, how to do it, and why you are doing it.

The book provides a level of detail that is stunning in its completeness, from making your own precision tools and using them, machining the parts, making your own polishing and grinding compounds, all the way to engraving and finishing, and finishing with constructing and using apparatus to test the accuracy of a watch.

This is an extremely detailed and thorough treatise on how to design, fabricate, decorate, and test a watch. The only way to get a better education at watch fabrication would be to apprentice yourself to George Daniels.

Highly, I say again, HIGHLY recommended.

The best, but skip if you own the Third Edition

This is arguably the last word in watchmaking, generously and clearly written and illustrated to provide just about every practical piece of information you need.

I have owned the Third Edition for some time, and was very excited to see an update, especially in the wake of Mr. Daniels' passing in October 2011. I was disappointed to find that the only updates seem to be two color photos of Mr. Daniels, eight small photos of his shop from 2010, and the changing of "fifty years" to "sixty years" in the Acknowledgements. The Preface is still called "Preface to the Third Edition." The table of contents and index are also identical.

So, if you are one of those lucky ones who already own the Third Edition, you're probably better off saving your money. If you weren't able to obtain one, and are somehow living without this amazing tome, you owe it to yourself to buy it now.

Beautiful book!

If you are a horologist, you need and will treasure this book. If you need to google that term, you may very well enjoy this book for its masterful illustrations and precise diagrams. Some may even consider it a worthy coffee table book, although I think that's a role fit best by lighter reading with many more pictures.

Watchmaking is a rather technical guide that expects you to know the basic terminiology and 'anatomy' of the watch. It gives guidance for setting-up your workshop, acquiring the right tools/materials, and the processes for making a watch. By learning from the late George Daniels, you have a real opportunity to become a master timekeeper! To supplement your education you can find great stuff online and for repairs, look to Henry Fried's The Watch Repairer's Manual.

Fascinating!

This is a fascinating study on the literary structure of Freud's writing. HOW he presents his arguments rather than WHAT they were. How did he appeal to his audience? Why did he state his propositions with such certainty? What were the resources of his figurative language? Recall that Freud won the Goethe Prize for literature, not for his theories of psychoanalysis. Harold Bloom considers Freud to be one of the great poets of our age on the strength of his literary merit. This book is a must read for all students of Freud, and a lot of fun as well. Patrick J. A comprehensive examination at cross-cultural violences.

This interdisciplinary reader covers definitions of violence and looks at violence in relation to law, gender, race, nationalism and class. Finally, it examines nonviolence alternatives as put forward by leaders such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
I originally picked this book up as a supplementary reader for a course on Gandhi. I wanted to have more cohesive understanding at the many ways violence affects our social landscape. It, and others, has found itself in a well-respected place in my personal library.
While its language is more academic than layman, I think it is very accessible for those who have an interest in the social dynamics of violence. Its wide variety of topics are sure to interest all readers.
We need to understand the root causes of violence if we ever hope to stop it. This book is an excellent beginning to understanding our global culture.

it is an indispensable book on violence and nonviolence

This marvellously edited book by Dr. steger is a wonderful reader on understanding violence and nonviolence. If you want to understand how our history has been shaped by violence and non-violence, this is a must read. All the great writings in the book are written by great theorists like Arendt and Martin Luther King,jr.,etc., which are really convenient for readers like me who are interested in writing papers on this subject.

About the Author
Joan R. Kaplowitz retired from her librarian position at UCLA in 2007. She remains active in the profession through her publications, her professional development workshops for librarians, and by continuing to teach the graduate information literacy instruction course in the Information Studies department at UCLA. Dr. Kaplowitz was also a member of the faculty development team for the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Institute for Information Literacy’s Immersion Program, and taught in six of the programs between 1999 and 2004. Her many publications include Transforming Information Literacy Instruction Using Learner-Centered Teaching, the award-winning Information Literacy Instruction: Theory and Practice, (co-authored with Esther Grassian), and the “Information Literacy Instruction” section the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science (also co-authored with Ms. Grassian).
