at the suggestion of a colleague this book was ordered for my 2nd grade granddaughter to be used as an enrichment tool. She is enjoying the challenges it presents.

it arrived within a resonable amt of time,and in good condition. sice I had seen an \older copy of this work book there were no surprises.

I would more than likely order from amazon again.

I've read several books by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and of them, HOT SHOT is my hands-down favorite. I found the characters rich and fascinating and I loved the backdrop of the birth of personal computers. And this is coming from someone who is just barely computer-literate!
Susannah's relationships with the pirate, the nerd, and the stuffed shirt are great. Her growth in the book from Daddy's girl, to rebel, to woman is wonderful. Also interesting is the evolution of her relationship with her sister, Paige. Anyone who wasn't touched by Joel and Angela's pilgrimage to Elvis' funeral in August, 1977, must have ice water flowing through her veins.
But the distinctiveness of the book is its exploration of the birth of personal computers. It was fun watching SysVal duke it out with Apple. As an aside, I thought the battle for Susannah at the end was one of the most hilarious scenes I've read in romance fiction. Don't miss it!
I haven't read another book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips that I've enjoyed as much as this one. Try it!

No, not your typical SEP

This was one of her first books and it shows her writing style changed quite a bit. I enjoyed this book it was interesting and it reminded me of a "Judith Michael" book so I actually understood the flow of the story with the long absence of romance between the 2 characters. I was lucky enough to have read this book early on in my SEP reading so therefore I wasn't to dissapointed.
This book is not "light" and "humorous" as her others but it is a keeper if you like to see an author's growth. She did a tremendous amount of research (you can tell) about the beginning of the Computer age and Silicon Valley which was much appreciated and I think the romance was just thrown in because that was what she writes. All in all not a bad book just not something to pick up if you just finished reading "It Had to Be You" or "Nobody's Baby but Mine" this is a different style all together.

Brings out the emotions!

This is the first book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips that I've read.. and I've been searching for a book that's as good, ever since.
I was amazed by the increadible research that SEP must have done to write such an indepth look into the beginnings of a computer company and how it affected the main character(s) lives. Of course, I'm sure she got the idea from the lives of Steve Jobbs and Bill Gates. But adding a female to this combination was the perfect ingredient.
Susannah is an incredible heroine, one I could relate to, and I was sad when the story of her life was over. Her relationships and hardships were very real, and I found myself eatting up every page.. wondering what would happen next.
You'll also find one of the most well-written flashbacks of a character's life when you read the story of Mitch's childhood. I feel like I could read a whole book just on him.
Read this book.. it's not a typical frivilous romance novel.. You'll enjoy the story, but be prepared to get angry, cry like a baby, and burst out in laughter. Enjoy!

I love this book

I've set myself two language-related tasks for this year. One is to brush up on my long-ignored French, and the other is to learn a new language (Swedish). Once you begin to get a handle on some basics, one of the best ways to learn is to read children's books in your chosen language. They're not just designed to entertain, not at all. Through the use of pictures and repetition of basic words and phrases, children's books teach spelling, grammar and idiomatic usage. They will guide the reader gently through new vocabulary by putting the words into simple context.

"Am I Small?" is a delightful book written both in Swedish and English, so there's never any question about whether you've gotten the right idea or not. But the repetition of Tamia's question, "Am I small?" and the various answers she receives go a long way to teaching basic language concepts. And in the end, Tamia's conclusion is exactly right, and a valuable lesson

The illustrations are just charming, and make this book even more memorable. If you plan on learning Swedish, give this book a place on your e-reader. If you know a child who is learning either English or Swedish -- the dual language text will work both ways -- this is a wonderful gift.

About the Author
K. F. Riley read mathematics at the University of Cambridge and proceeded to a Ph.D. there in theoretical and experimental nuclear physics. He became a Research Associate in elementary particle physics at Brookhaven, and then, having taken up a lectureship at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, continued this research at the Rutherford Laboratory and Stanford; in particular he was involved in the experimental discovery of a number of the early baryonic resonances. As well as having been Senior Tutor at Clare College, where he has taught physics and mathematics for over 40 years, he has served on many committees concerned with the teaching and examining of these subjects at all levels of tertiary and undergraduate education. He is also one of the authors of 200 Puzzling Physics Problems.

M. P. Hobson read natural sciences at the University of Cambridge, specialising in theoretical physics, and remained at the Cavendish Laboratory to complete a Ph.D. in the physics of star-formation. As a Research Fellow at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and subsequently an Advanced Fellow of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, he developed an interest in cosmology, and in particular in the study of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. He was involved in the first detection of these fluctuations using a ground-based interferometer. Currently a University Reader at the Cavendish Laboratory, his research interests include both theoretical and observational aspects of cosmology, and he is the principal author of General Relativity: An Introduction for Physicists. He is also a Director of Studies in Natural Sciences at Trinity Hall and enjoys an active role in the teaching of undergraduate physics and mathematics.

Stephen Bence obtained both his undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences and his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Cambridge. He then became a Research Associate with a special interest in star-formation processes and the structure of star-forming regions. In particular his research has concentrated on the physics of jets and outflows from young stars. He has had considerable experience of teaching mathematics and physics to undergraduate and pre-university students.

comprehensive AND comprehensible

I've been teaching an upper-level course in math methods of physics on and off for thirty-five years or so. This is as good a text as I've found. In fact, I've been using this book since it began life as a much smaller volume by Riley alone. It has always provided a down-to-earth exposition of applicable mathematics. Now it provides more than ever, include two nice chapters on group theory, with more problems than the previous editions.

Despite its broad coverage, it is not an encyclopedia. Individual sections are thorough, well illustrated by examples, and comprehensible. Yes, I might have organized some of the material somewhat differently. But that is largely a matter of taste.

The reviewer who alleges that one must have mastered a lot of math to benefit from this book clearly has not read the first chapter. The book by Boas with which he compares it is a) less comprehensive, b) at a lower level overall, c) and a lot more expensive.

At $63, this volume is a real bargain.

Just one comment, this is a great book.

This is one of the best mathematical methods book, very readable.

It has very clear explainations, in each topic it's developing from basic intuitions until it reaches the genralized equations, several detailed examples help a reader checks his understanding and follows the authors.

The contents are very well-organized and self-contained, one can looks directly at the topic he wants to know. It's lucid and normally answer and teach a reader what he wants to do. All definitions make sense and a reader can accepts easily it's a smart thing to do math that way.

It also serves as a one-stop, if you feel confused when you're reading because your background knowledge is not strong enough, just search for the previous related topics, all brilliant explainations are waiting for you to grasp them, make you ready for what you need.

Any undergrads and beginning grad students in Physics will find this book is great. This is an excellent example how to write an approachable math methods book. Eventhough it has a thick over than 1,300 pages, but it never turns a reader away becuase of its thickness at all. Once one starts reading it, he'll enjoy and come back looking for another explaination.

One more great point is, this book contains a lot of real physical examples besides the math formulations, make a reader understands the topic deeply and sees a practical use.

Besides the book, I totally don't agree with a previous comment from a chemical physicist who gave this book just one star.

clear exposition of practical material

Beautifuly organized compendium of mathematical tools which are daily bread and butter of every theoretical physicst. Excellent for first year graduate students wanting to pursue career in any branch of theoretical physics.
The main advantages which distinguishes this classic from others is clear and conscise pedagogical style and excellent selection of topics which are being discussed fully and without sacrifising mathematical rigour.
However for advanced students this text may sometimes bore with overdetailed explanations and minor details.
Summing up everything, if you wanna learn mathphys and want to start you are in the right place.

About the Author
FLOYD A. BEAMS, PH.D., authored the first edition
of Advanced Accounting in 1979 and actively revised his text
through the next six revisions and twenty-one years while maintaining
an active professional and academic career at Virginia
Tech where he rose to the rank of Professor, retiring in 1995.
Beams earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University
of Nebraska, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He
published actively in journals, including The Accounting Review,
Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, Journal of Accountancy,
The Atlantic Economic Review, Management Accounting,
and others. He was a member of the American Accounting Association
and the Institute of Management Accountants and served
on committees for both organizations. Beams was honored with
the National Association of Accounts’ Lybrand Bronze Medal
Award for outstanding contribution to accounting literature, the
Distinguished Career in Accounting award from the Virginia Society
of CPAs, and the Virginia Outstanding Accounting Educator
award from the Carman G. Blough student chapter of the Institute
of Management Accountants. Professor Beams passed away in
2004; however, we continue to honor his contribution to the field
and salute the impact he had on this volume.

JOSEPH H. ANTHONY, PH.D., joined the Michigan
State University faculty in 1983 and is an Associate Professor
of Accounting at the Eli Broad College of Business. He earned
his B.A. in 1971 and his M.S. in 1974, both awarded by Pennsylvania
State University, and he earned his Ph.D. from The
Ohio State University in 1984. He is a Certified Public Accountant,
and is a member of the American Accounting Association,
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, American
Finance Association, and Canadian Academic Accounting Association.
He has been recognized as a Lilly Foundation Faculty
Teaching Fellow and as the MSU Accounting Department’s
Outstanding Teacher in 1998—1999 and in 2010—2011.
Anthony teaches a variety of courses, including undergraduate
introductory, intermediate, and advanced financial accounting.
He also teaches financial accounting theory and financial
statement analysis at the master’s level, as well as financial accounting
courses in Executive MBA programs, and a doctoral
seminar in financial accounting and capital markets research. He
co-authored an introductory financial accounting textbook.
Anthony’s research interests include financial statement
analysis, corporate reporting, and the impact of accounting
information in the securities markets. He has published a number
of articles in leading accounting and finance journals, including
The Journal of Accounting & Economics, The Journal of
Finance, Contemporary Accounting Research, The Journal of
Accounting, Auditing, & Finance, and Accounting Horizons.

BRUCE BETTINGHAUS, PH.D., is an Assistant
Professor of Accounting in the School of Accounting in The
Seidman College of Business at Grand Valley State University.
His teaching experience includes corporate governance and
accounting ethics, as well as accounting theory and financial
reporting for both undergraduates and graduate classes. He
earned his Ph.D. at Penn State University and his B.B.A. at Grand
Valley State University. Bruce has also served on the faculties
of the University of Missouri and Michigan State University. He
has been recognized for high-quality teaching at both Penn State
and Michigan State Universities. His research interests focus on
governance and financial reporting for public firms. He has published
articles in The International Journal of Accounting and
The Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance.

KENNETH A. SMITH, PH.D., is a senior lecturer in the
Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, his M.B.A.
from Ball State University, and his B.A. in Accounting from
Anderson University (IN). He is a Certified Public Accountant.
Smith’s research interests include government accounting
and budgeting, non-profit financial management, non-financial
performance reporting, and information systems in government
and non-profit organizations. He has published articles in such
journals as Accounting Horizons, Journal of Government Financial
Management, Public Performance & Management Review,
Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, International Public
Management Journal, Government Finance Review, and Strategic
Finance. Smith’s professional activities include membership in
the American Accounting Association, the Association of
Government Accountants, the Government Finance Officers
Association, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Institute
of Management Accountants. He serves on the Steering Committee
for the Public Performance Measurement Reporting Network
and formerly served as the Executive Director for the Oregon
Public Performance Measurement Association.
