Terribly earnest in his approach but direct in intent, storyteller and schoolteacher Thomas writes simple, declarative sentences: "Somewhere today . . . someone is being a friend instead of fighting . . . someone is teaching his little sister to ride a bike." Each sentence occupies a full-page spread, with a number of photographs of children illustrating the activity mentioned. The photographs themselves, which range from clear close-ups to artfully blurred or angled shots, show a reassuringly varied cast of children and adults of many races and cultures. For "joining a friend's celebration," children break a pinata; for "learning to do things in a different way," a boy learns to use chopsticks from his Asian friends. A slightly hokey ending, in which children are shown reading this very book "and thinking about making the world a better place," is in tune with the book's gentle didacticism. GraceAnne A. Big and expensive, but very useful overview

I had the privilege of attending a one year seminar on Narrative Analysis by Professor Michael Toolan, and compared with that lively and exciting experience, the book he wrote more than ten years before seems to lack something. It seems a bit on the dry side, but that's besides the point: You are probably not going to pick up a linguistic introduction to narrative for entertainment anyway.
The book covers basic story structure (in search of a grammar of plot), time (order, duration, summary and scene - i.e. telling and showing, frequency), character, setting, focalization, free indirect discourse, sociolinguistics and more. You have to keep in mind that the approach here is linguistic.
The book does not specifically deal with film narratives - if you want to focus on that, I recommend reading Seymour Chatman's "Story and Discourse" or Bordwell and Thompson's "Film Art: An Introduction". However, even then, you might find the concepts summarized in this book helpful.
On the whole, this is a very useful introduction, though it may be tough going in places. Other books you may find useful are "Narratology - an introduction" and "Narrative Fiction".

A good book, and thorough

Toolan gives us a complete theoretical toolbox that, indeed, contains some sharp tools with which to analyze literary narratives. It's a good introduction, and as is mentioned early on, it's both linguistic and critical. The critical aspect is the book's strength: the author neatly summarizes past research (ranging quite broadly) and argues within the linguistic field in order to set up his own complex position on each aspect of narratology. The reader leaves with a sense of depth and sophistication - Genette, Bal, Halliday are all given due treatment. In particular, the treatment of Genette is so skillfully done that readers of the French critic may well find themselves reaching, instead, for Toolan in the future.

About the Author
Father Paul O'Sullivan, O.P., was born on February 7, 1871. After studying in Dublin, he went on to Rome, where he was ordained a Dominican. He then pursued a Lectorate degree for theology, which in turn prepared him for his future career in writing simple, profound books and preaching to the faithful. He is the author of How to Be Happy, All About the Angels, The Wonders of the Mass, Read Me or Rue It, An Easy Way to Become a Saint, and The Secret of Confession.
Father O'Sullivan also founded the ???Catholic Printing Press??? and established the Rosary Association, one of several associations he created with the Church's permission. He wrote on and had a great devotion to St. Philomena as well. He died in 1958, on the Feast of the Presentation.

MUST READ FOR ALL CATHOLICS!

This book shows the unestimable graces we receive each time we participate in the Sacrifice of the Mass. It tells us how much more blessed we are than the angels, because they can't receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity that we receive every Sunday and often take for granted. I recomment this for Priests to read as a homily on a day when many are in attendance, because this will get people coming to church as often as they can.

What could I say more than what is said by the great Paul Kristeller in his flattering preface to this work? This is what, in my sense, seems specially remarkable: the authors (whose names deservs no comments)produced a very comprehensive introduction to philosophy of Renaissance, particularly sensible to the huge differences among the trends that people what covers this historical period. Avoiding the trap of encompassing all the philosophical productions homogeneously, they arrive serveral times to point to particular topics of real philosophical interest (as, for example, when pointing to the skeptical context created by the conflict of authorities rediscovered from antiquity, or when commenting about contemporary relevance of Renaissance philosophy, in the last chapter, the only one I think could may still be allonged).

a lovely book which is very helpful

It was in 2003 when my wife and I got married, and Maldives was chosen as our honeymoon destination. There were not so much information about the resorts back then so we've had a hard time making the decision. Luckily we did a great choice and had a couple of wonderful weeks there. At the end of that trip when we spend our final hours there at Male (the capital), we found this book (the 1st edition) at a local souvenir shop and bought it right away. The ratings about the relative price and room density, and the icons in the "information box" of this book give you a quick understanding of each resort and you may find it quite easy to narrow down your choices from more than one hundred to only a few according to your own interests. Beautiful pictures and well arranged texts give you a very comfortable and relaxed feeling when you read it, just like what the Maldives does. I’ve purchased the following editions of the book as a collection because Adrian Neville keeps visiting the resorts and making updates. (There are a lot more new resorts opening since then by the way.) And now this kindle edition makes it even more convenient to use as a guide book. We returned to the Maldives several times after our honeymoon and each time we did, we took this book from the bookshelf. Reading this book always reminds me of the beautiful memories there. It’s really a great book to have if you plan to go or already have been there.

Enormously useful!

Picking a resort in the Maldives can be incredibly difficult - there are so many options that it becomes almost impossible to absorb all the information. Planning a holiday to the Maldives with Adrian Neville's knowledge of the islands and the unbiased and pertinent information contained in this book makes it all much less stressful. A must-have - and if we don't have a trip planned, the book makes for wonderful browsing and dreaming!

If it wasn't for my professor this book would have been burned! The end chapter exercises are barely about the chapter they are in and the examples are at least 4 pages long and very hard to follow! Don't use the beam tables in the back either, just look them up online!

What a great resource

I teach an advanced oral English class for professionals, in China. I am very impressed with the books in this series, and with this one in particular. I received Discussions That Work a couple of weeks ago and have gone through it cover to cover. I was amazed to find that I could imagine my class discussing almost every topic given, participating in almost every activity suggested. This book is full of wonderful ideas, clearly presented by the author and requiring little advance preparation by me. Ms. Ur is a master at her craft. Highly recommended!
