In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history-- because sometimes history needs a little help. At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren't for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England. Like that could go wrong.

Gr 9 Up—In real life, Edward VI and Lady Jane Grey died young in 16th-century England. Here, Edward and Jane get another chance at happiness thanks to the irrepressible imaginations of the authors. Adventure, intrigue, humor, and romance abound—so, too, does high fantasy. England is a place where people (including royalty) are either Eians (those who can shape-shift) or Verities (those who cannot). Because many Verities believe Eian magic is evil, they set about to obliterate it. Eians retaliate. Also, someone keeps poisoning the king's food. The plot, then, involves Edward, Jane, and their allies trying to figure out how to keep peace in the kingdom, find out who is poisoning the king's food, and restore Edward to the throne (he is presumed dead and gads about incognito for part of the book). Eian "facts" are woven in with such subtle assurance that they come across as a genuine part of English history. For instance, the year the volatile Henry VIII discovered his leonine animal form and devoured the court jester is known in the kingdom's collective memory as the Year of the Lion. Wisecracks are prevalent, which would be grating after a while if the characters did not fairly sparkle with the complete array of honest human qualities. Readers will need to know the basic backstory of Lady Jane Grey and Edward VI. VERDICT A great choice for those who enjoy lighthearted, alternative history adventures and romance.—Jennifer Prince, Buncombe County Public Libraries, NC

From the Back Cover
EDWARD is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown. . . .
JANE is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than in romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended . . .
GIFFORD is a horse. That is, he’s an Eian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.
THE PLOT THICKENS as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?
The comical, fantastical, romantical, entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey but not really
Lady Jane Grey, sixteen, is about to be married to a total stranger—and caught up in an insidious plot to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But that’s the least of Jane’s problems. She’s about to become Queen of England.
Like that could go wrong.

Hysterically hilarious historical fantasy about Jane Grey
By Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books
My criteria for my first read of the year usually is as follows: an author I know and love, a book I’ve been highly anticipating and something that’s easy to read. My Lady Jane easily met all three requirements, so I didn’t hesitate to dive right into it on the first of January. And, truth be told, I couldn’t have picked a better choice! Jane Grey is known in actual history to be the “nine day queen”, Edward VI’s successor for a little over a week. No one really knows what happened, and in response to the “what if” hanging in the air, authors Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows worked together to tell the (not so true) (but oh so fun) tale of the Lady Jane Grey.
My Lady Jane is a book that is meant to entertain in a gloriously funny, satisfying way. The narration is excellent, complete with wry observations, witty retorts and a dash of whimsy. I was hooked right from the start! (And no, it’s not just because I find British royal history fascinating, though that was definitely another reason I enjoyed it.) I loved the tone, which made it feel like I was reading someone’s journal or hearing a storyteller tell the tale. I loved the switches between characters, because it was all too interesting to discover what was going on with each individual. I loved the humor, because it is so rare for a novel to make me laugh out loud (and I did laugh reading this one, and multiple times). I loved the magic, which was simple but still so entertaining. It was certainly all too easy to get swept up in learning what was to become of Jane, Guildford and Edward, and it was just impossible to do anything but see these three through to the end of their story.
Can you tell I was happily entertained by this tale? Because I was! The combination of magic, history and humor (with just a tiny bit of romance) was utterly irresistible. Whether you’re fascinated by actual history or a total newbie to Jane’s story, this novel is guaranteed to make you crack a smile, if not elicit fully on belly laughs. I know I enjoyed it, and I certainly think that plenty of other readers will too.

I love this book!!!
By Amazon Customer
Yes, I stayed up until 4:00 am to finish MY LADY JANE by the Lady Janies. And it was so very worth it!!! This is my new favorite book! The Lady Janies have taken the tragic, horrific story of Lady Jane Grey and made it something hysterical to read. It is very clear that this a work of historical FICTION. There are details that are true to history, too, which makes a book like this that much more fantastic. I LOVE historical fiction and since I have always been uber fascinated with Lady Jane Grey, this book fed my love of reading like nothing else has! This book is simply delightful!
What makes this book even more super-fantastic are the wonderful
references to modern-day movies/stories!!
It is a clear tribute to one of my all-time favorite movies, LADYHAWKE--"always together, eternally apart." I hope this book sends millions of people running to watch this movie because it's fantastic!!!
There is a reference to The Red Wedding in GAME OF THRONES!!!
To my great delight, it is also a wonderful tribute to the amazing and super-fantastic THE PRINCESS BRIDE!!!!
Lady Jane is described as a Hermoine-type character with a love of reading, loving libraries, and wild [red] hair!!!
Elizabeth (yes, THE Queen Elizabeth) is a Professor McGonagall-type character!!!
Lady Jane uses a frying pan to beat up soldiers, just like Rapunzel in TANGLED!!!! That's quite possibly my favorite part!!! "Frying pans! Who knew?!"
G reminds me so much of R in WARM BODIES! He's also portrayed as a would-be, possibly-could-have-been William Shakespeare! And his constant, "Oh, that's good. I need to write that down," is wonderfully reminiscent of the fantastic DRAGONHEART!!!
There is even a reference to JAWS!!! "We're going to need a bigger sword!"
I know I haven't even come close to mentioning all the wonderful stories the Lady Janes have referenced in the wonderful MY LADY JANE, so if you see others, I'd LOVE to compare notes. This book was worth the impulse buy, reading it all in one day, and staying up until 4:00 am!!!

Escape In A Book Thats Worth The Film!!!!
By Amazon Customer
This book was everything I hoped it'd be!!! The jokes, the characters, the all new plot of the story. I love history so I'm not usually the one that likes history to meet Animal Farm (good book, although it sounds like a toddler's bedtime story). Anyway the book was just absolutely beautiful. The love Jane shared with her cousin and watching( I could literally see the vision in my mind and I felt like a Hollywood director) her fall in love with G. Even though it was quite obvious that they would form this beautiful bond, it's how the writers put it into words that made the film in my head start to roll. And i saw a real love unfold.....For the first time again(watched grandparents rewrote their vows)
I really hope this book get sbecause out there it's amazing truly wonderful for anyone willing to escape.
